The martonas rollercoaster is back on track

These days, there is certainly no better action catalyst than martonas when he sits down at the high stakes tables. It is obvious that may of the regulars feel that they have an edge on him, but regardless if this is true or not, they certainly are in for a wild ride when playing against him.

Yesterday was no difference in this regards. Playing $300/$600, martonas went out very hard, winning almost $230K from Cole South in about 1000 hands. After a ten hour break, he was back at it, 4-tabling heads up against Urindanger, winning about $290K from him, putting him at a total of $520K for the day. After this, his luck turned, though. Aejones took Urindanger’s seat, and in about 50 minutes, proceeded to win a little more than $420K, prompting martonas to step up to the $500/$1000 level.

At the new stakes, things again started out well. Martonas won almost $260K in the first hour, with most of that coming from kingsofcards, but after that his results took a nose dive. Kingsofcards got his revenge by winning $452K and durrrr took $70K which, in addition some other sessions gave a total loss for the day of $154K.

Martonas kings hold up against kingsofcards jacks in a $284K pot

This hand is a good example of martonas geting paid off when he has a premium hand. It is possible that kingsofcards would not lay down his jacks (or maybe play them less aggressively pre-flop) against any player, but against martonas it will never be an option to fold this hand before the flop. On this hand, he gets to put in a big all-in bet, something that would have forced martonas to fold many of the hands he would 4-bet with pre-flop. Unfortunately for kingsofcards, martonas held the kings this time and wasn’t going anywhere.

Kingsofcards slowplays his aces and martonas ends up in the trap.$237K pot.

For those of you who thought it a bit hazardous for kingsofcards to move in with jacks over martonas’ 4-bet on the previous hand, need only have a look at this one. Here he 4-bets with 96 off preflop, and kingsofcards makes a shrewd move by cold calling this bet. Martonas continuation bet is understandable, but I think it should quite obvious to him that he did not turn the best hand when he hit his nine, and also that he will not be able to make his opponent fold in this spot. I can’t think of a single hand which kingsofcards would have played in this manner that does not beat martonas’ hand here. The whole situation reeks of a trap, and he should have been able to give up on the hand at this point.

However, sometimes it is difficult to change gears in the middle of the hand, so this is what happens to über-aggressive players from time to time, and also why martonas has no problems finding opponents to play him at these stakes.

Ziigmund makes a nice call on the river to pick off durrrr’s bluff. $287K pot

The largest pot of the day belonged to Ziigmund, who depite this hand, had a bad day at the office in the PLO. Whether he made a ‘steam’-call on the river here or if he had everything under control is a bit uncertain, but I am sure that the only thing he cared about in the end was being right. He did win about $700K in the mixd games, so he is probably not too unhappy.

Looking at the hand, it is a bit difficult to put durrrr on a hand where the ten on the river would have helped him the way he was playing, so there is certainly grounds for suspicion on Ziigmund’s part. Durrrr would often make a continuation bet with a straight draw, so this is probably why Ziigmund decided to call in the end. Regardless of this, it must feel a bit nervy to call almost $70K with two pairs on that board, but he obviously felt that a little more than 3-1 was sufficient pot odds this time.
