The top of the most recent leader board is a virtual who’s who of the high stakes poker community. All of the six players who won more than $150K are among the ones who figure most prominently in these reports. Best among these was Gus Hansen who managed to win $592K, but Ziigmund wasn’t so far behind with a $444K win. Durrrr wasn’t as lucky, dropping well over $500K, so he is facing an uphill battle getting back on track.
Ziigmund flops the nut flush, and howisitfeellike makes a bad at the wrong time. $260K pot.
Most times it is ill advised to slowplay the nuts in a multiway pot when you are playing PLO. This time, however, Ziigmund was able to win an additional $73K by not betting out on the flop. Ziigmund’s slowplay here is relatively risk free since there are not many cards that could really hurt him here. Since both of the other players in front of him checked, there is little reason to believe that either of them has a set or even two pairs, so it seems that this is almost the perfect spot to choose this line.
When the queen comes on the turn, it also seems like a good opportunity for howisitfeellike to take a stab at the pot. Since none of the others showed any kind of strength it is not at all unlikely that his bet will make the others fold. And if he should happen to be called by a two pair type hand, he will still have winners on the river. This time, though, he fell victim to Ziigmund’s trap, but that’s how it goes sometimes.
Cole South flops a wrap straight draw but hits runner runner flush to take down durrrr’s kings. $206K pot.
When the pot got as large as it did preflop, Cole South’s bet on the flop is quite clear cut. He has a nice draw and if he waits for durrrr to make a continuation bet, he will not get any fold equity. By betting out, he puts durrrr to the test and with a mere overpair, it is not obvious that he should stick with his hand. In the end it comes down to whether or not durrrr thinks that his hand has 37% ($76 185 / $206 370) equity against Cole South’s range, and apparently he felt that this criteria was fulfilled.
In this specific spot, it turns out that durrrr was actually a 57% favorite, but fate was on Cole South’s side in this hand, and the two spades on the end tipped the scales in his favor. While it is easy to conclude that durrrr must have played badly to lose over half a million, you can see that you don’t have to lose many coinflips like these before you lose a bundle.
On a side note…
I see that there is an ongoing discussion about the new rush-poker games over at Full Tilt. I have been checking them out and I must say that I think that it an inspired idea. I think that this has a chance to being a real alternative to multi tabling.
Obviously, Full Tilt would not have have given us these games if they didn’t see it as a way of making some extra money. Because you are able to play a lot more hands, you will also generate a lot more rake for the poker site. Therefore, it would be unwise to play without a rakeback deal. Sign up via our Full Tilt rakeback page, and you will save yourself a lot of money.
