A new day and a new player climbs to the top of the leaderboard. Yesterday it was David Oppenheim’s turn with a great $322K win, and in the process taking down the two largest pots of the day. As you can see from the table to the right, there was also a few other players who secured six- figure wins and even Patrik Antonius got in on the action. It has been a rough year for him so far, but at least now he can show some profits so maybe he can build on that. One player that didn’t fare so well is Brian Townsend who was knocked around to the tune of $580K, something that brings his losses for the year close to $900K.
Oppenheim flops trips to take down Townsend’s aces. $231K pot.
If you wanted a hand to show the difference between how Oppenheim and Townsend was running, you need to look no further. In my opinion, there is no way that Townsend can get away from his aces in this spot, and in reality I think he plays them very well.
When you hold aces heads-up on a flop like this, you basically ignore the worst case scenarios and play as though your opponent has a hand you can beat. Townsend didn’t move in on the flop because he wanted to trap Oppenheim into making another bet with a worse hand. You might think that giving a free card might be risky, but even if Townsend moves in on the flop he will not get Oppenheim to fold a flush draw, so it is really not something that needs to be considered. But, as we all know, regardless of how well you play a hand, your opponent will still take off with your whole stack.
Oppenheim flops trips again, and Townsend makes an ill-timed bluff. $203K pot.
The second largest pot of the day featured the same line as in the one above, only with the players in reversed roles. Although he is out of position, Oppenheim’s choice to just call his opponent’s raise is for the same reason that Townsend did so with his aces. He didn’t want to scare off Townsend if he was bluffing, and as it happens, this was exactly the case and Oppenheim was rewarded when Townsend bet out on the turn.
