It was one of the quietest Saturday’s we have seen in a long time. Jungleman12 at the top of the leaderboard was a $66K winner, and I can’t remember the last time the best 24 hour result was this low. Anyway, Gus Hansen and theASHMAN103 played 62 hands of $500/$1000 PLO which contained a few interesting pots, so we can have a look at those.

Second pair is good enough for Hansen to win a $100K pot.

The largest pot of the day, and in my opinion a bit of a gift from theASHMAN103. He flops bottom pair with a gutshot draw and moves in without much in the way of fold equity. This means that he needs to have 44% equity for his move to be good, and in this spot I can’t see that he is even close to getting that against Hansen’s range. On this exact hand theASHMAN103 has about 22% equity and that is against a hand which is not really a worst case scenario. Hansen was probably expecting to having to hit is straight draw, but as it turned out the pair of eights was more than enough.

If the stacks had been deeper it could have been possible for theASHMAN103 to stay in the hand on the flop. The typical play would have been to float the flop and then decide what to do from there. In this spot it wasn’t really an option since the stacks were so shallow, but the move theASHMAN103 made should have been ruled out for the same reason.

Hansen flops a straight but theASHMAN103 rivers a flush to win a $88K pot.

This time around, it is a lot easier to understand the play from theASHMAN103. He has a gutshot straight draw in addition to the flush draw and it is also possible that his Hansen will fold his hand to the flop raise. Obviously, with a flopped straight and a straight flush draw, Hansen will not go anywhere. And since he is blocking four of his opponents flush winners he is a 2-1 favorite, but that didn’t do him much good when the king of hearts fell on the turn.

TheASHMAN103 flops a set, but Hansen rivers a flush to win an $81K pot.

theASHMAN103 rivers two pairs to crack Hansens aces. $80K pot.
