The two players with the most talked about downswings of the year was the ones figuring at the top of yesterdays’ leaderboard. Cole South who lost over $3M in March and Patrik Antonius whose first three months of 2010 was as bad as we’ve seen at the high stakes tables. While Antonius crossed the $1M mark for April with his win yesterday, things have been a bit quieter from South lately. Maybe yesterday is a sign of a new push upward for him.
Cole South flops the best hand and the best draw to win a $146K pot.
Once the flop comes down, it is understandable that Daniel Moravec gets his chips in on this hand, but he probably shouldn’t have gotten himself into this spot in the first place. Being out of position with a marginal hand and against at least two opponents, there was little reason for him to make a 3-bet before the flop. Granted, he was unlucky with the flop, but that is the risk you run by building a large pot with marginal values. The ten of hearts on the turn increased his odds some, but fate was not in a mood to reward his play on this hand, so Cole South was rewarded with his largest pot of the day.
Antonius flops a set against Hansens top par/gutshot straight draw. $115K pot.
How to get value from big hands is something that will greatly influence any player’s results in the long run, and on this hand it certainly seems like Antonius knows how to get the maximum out of Gus Hansen. On this hand, though, it seems like Hansen should have been able to save some money when he was raised on the turn. For his call to be correct, he needs to have 35% equity with one card to come, and if he is behind, the best case scenario would be that he has about 20% EV (9 winners). Considering that there could be many scenarios where Hansen has fewer winners, at least half of Antonius’ range must be bluffs for Hansen’s call to be correct. I have a really hard time to see how this could be the case.
theASHMAN103 flops a set and fades Observer84’s big draw. $239K pot.
durrrrr flops middle set against Ivey’s top two pairs and wins a $158K pot.
