Phil Ivey took some time out from the golf course to put in a good number of hands at the tables yesterday, and as most of the action these days are in the seven games, that is where we found him. And being arguably the be best all around player in the world, it is certainly not to his disadvantage to be playing in these games. Yesterday he was winning in all the different games with $151K coming in the stud games, $147K in NLHE and $79K playing PLO and O8.
Antonius moves in on a semibluffs, but Ivey calls with his kings and wins a $158K pot.
Someday I might take a deeper look at the data to see how often players get away with raises on the turn. I mean, it has to work some of the time or we wouldn’t see it so often, but the only time the hands get any attention is when the bluffs or semi-bluffs gets picked off. On this hand, the largest one of the day, Antonius made a quite normal call on the flop with his gutshot draw and overcard.
When he pairs the deuce on the turn, there is a chance that his hand is good, so he will not fold here. The problem is that if he just calls, he will have a very difficult decision to make on river if a blank hits and Ivey moves in. Just calling would also have the disadvantage of giving Ivey the opportunity to make a valuebet on the river with a hand like 88 or similar. By raising the turn, Antonius puts the difficult decision on Ivey instead.
Obviously, this time Ivey wasn’t going anywhere but Antonius still had about a one in four shot to make his hand but there was no help to be found on the river this time.
