Doesburg enters the stage with a $106K win

There are many players who takes a shot at the higher stakes only to be sent back to the lower stakes with their tails between their legs. That the guy who takes the shots winds up atop of the leaderboard is a very rare occurrence, but yesterday Doesburg did exactly that with a $106K win.

For the record, it is not the first time we have seen Doesburg play at these levels, but he hasn’t showed up in about two years, so it is not too farfetched to consider him a new player. We don’t have much info on this player, but Doesburg is a small city in Holland, so that might be a hint. There are also some records of one Bert van Doesburg  (Holland) in the tournament databases, but I have no idea if there is a connection.

Anyway, yesterday he made most of his winnings in a 125 hand match of $100/$200 PLO against THEDONKEYNO1 in which he secured himself three of the four largest pots of the day. Let’s have a closer look:

Doesburg picks off THEDONKEYNO1 bluffs to win a $48K pot.

Sometimes you have to float with bad to marginal hands in order to make it difficult for your opponent to put you on a definite hand range. There are, however, spots that are better suited than others to make these sort of plays, and in my opinion THEDONKEYNO1 made a poor choice when he decided to call Doesburg’s flop raise here. He has very little chanced of backing into a real hand, and in addition he will have no clue which turn cards are good for him to make a move.

This problem was clearly illustrated when the third club hit the board and Doesburg checked. From THEDONKEYNO1 point of view, there is a chance that his opponent did not like the look of that card, so if the play on the flop should have any meaning, THEDONKEYNO1 just has to make a stab at the pot here. Then, when the board does not pair on the river, it is quite natural to make one final attempt at the pot. Doesburg’s play up to that point makes it quite likely that he flopped a set in which case it would be difficult for him to make the final call. So even if it seems that THEDONKEYNO1 play on the turn and river was quite reasonable, it was the one bad judgment on the flop that in the end cost him his stack.

Doesburg turns top two pairs to win a $44K pot.

Doesburg flops top two and has THEDONKEYNO1 drawing very thin. $40K pot.

In other news, you can see that Isildur1 made a guest appearance winning a little more than $12K, so maybe we can hope that the action will pick up in the immediate future.
