After starting the week down close to $200K on Monday, Gus Hansen turned it all around on Tuesday with an amazing run in the seven game that took him from the bottom of the leader board to the top of it. Another player who was running hot was deprimiert who managed to win $258K in just 108 hands of $2K/$4K limit hold’em, and almost all of it against Phil Ivey. In the other end of the ladder we find Patrik Antonius who lost close to $700k in some sick Omaha Hi/Lo games, Cole South was the largest winner in these sessions but he basically took a beating in all the other games he played and lost about $150k.
Ivey flops a set and fades South’s flush draw to win a $171K pot
Even though Ivey had a tough time over these last few days, he did win the second largest pot of the two days. Cole South tried to make a big move and if it hadn’t been for Ivey flopping a set, it might have been a successful one. It is difficult to say what Antonius held, but it seems that a hand like KQ or KJ is a good guess. So if South should get Ivey to fold, Antonius will have a difficult decision and even if he does call, South will have even odds to win the pot. But when you make moves like this in a multiway pot, there is always the chance that the player you least fear will get involved with a massive hand.
Antonius turns a straight and gets Galfond to pay him off. $199K pot.
What do you think that Phil Galfond could hold here in order to pay his opponent off all the way? My guess is that he flopped a set, but turned it into a bluff catcher when a possible straight came into play. His original plan must have been to use his position to make a big raise on the turn, but when the ace of spades appeared it was a lot less tempting to move in. If Antonius has a straight, the money will go in regardless of the line Galfond chooses, but if Antonius has anything less, there is probably more value in letting him keep betting the hand.
