Gus Hansen is certainly no stranger to big swings, but yesterday must have been some kind pf record even for him. In just over 2100 hands he managed to drop over $1.1 million dollars to Phil Ivey and Cole South, and what is even more astounding is that most of it came in limit games. In the $2K/$4K O8 game he lost $358K to Ivey and $99K to South, while he lost $335K in the same game when it was played as part of the seven game rotation. We’ll have to see what happens over the next few days and weeks, but after a beating like this, I would not be surprised to see him take a break for a while. Let’s hope for his sake that he will come back a lot stronger.
Unfortunately, we haven’t got many of the hands from these limit games, so instead I thought we’d look a bit closer at one of the hands from Saturday’s massive action:
Durrrr hits his straight draw twice to win both halves of a $529K pot.
This hand was posted in the report yesterday, but it is worth to take a closer look at it. At first I thought cadillac1944 went a bit overboard with his two pairs on this hand, but the more I look at it, the harder I find it to come up with an alternative line. His main problem is that he is playing over 400 big blinds deep out of position. If he is ever to fold here, he would have to do so to durrrr’s first raise, but at that point he has reason to believe that his hand is good. You might argue that he could just call that raise and see what peels off on the turn, but playing a vulnerable hand like this out of position is not very tempting either.
The other problem with cadillac1944’s hand is that he can doesn’t have any significant re-draws if he is up against a set. It is not all that likely, but should durrrr have flopped top set here cadillac1944 will be drawing closer to dead. From durrrr’s point of view it is a lot easier since he has the open ended straight draw to fall back on should his opponent table a strong hand. As it was, it turned out that both players had flopped the same two pairs, but durrrr’s straight draw makes him a favorite, but only 11-9 in terms of equity. Unfortunately for cadillac1944 this didn’t help him much when durrrr made his straight both times the dealer dealt the turn and the river.
