Ok, so that might not be prose on a high level, but the fact remains that deprimiert can’t feel too good about losing $414K to Patrik Antonius in 1885 hands of the $2K/$4K fixed limit game. Antonius also won close to $100K from IHateJuice in the same game, so even with a $192K loss to Phil Galfond at $300/$600 PLO he ended up as the biggest winner of the day.
Cole South gets a real cooler on the turn to pay off Ziigmund. $309K
Top two pairs is a strong hand when playing heads up PLO. The chances of your opponent holding a set is dramatically reduced, so normally it takes a straight or better to beat two pairs. The problem is that you don’t have many re-draws in those cases where you are beat, and will be drawing completely dead when you are facing top set like Cole South did here. On this hand, South had an extra blocker with his third pair, so he had good reason to believe that his hand was best on the turn. Unfortunately for him, this was one of the spots that he was drawing completely dead, so he was forced to hand over $150K to Ziigmund. In all, Ziigmund won $179K in this match, so this hand made almost all the difference.
Phil Galfond flops top set and avoids Antonius’ straight draw twice to win a $119K pot.
As mentioned above, Phil Galfond had a very good session against Patrik Antonius and this was one of the hands that contributed towards that result. Antonius had a difficult decision to make on the flop here since a raise would make him pot committed, presumably as an underdog. There is something to be said for floating with the straight draw, but if Galfond bets the turn as well there is little chance that Antonius can make any sort of play at the pot. Therefore, if he wants any kind of fold equity, the flop is the place to make the move. Obviously, Galfond was never going to fold his hand in this situation, and Antonius found himself as a 3-1 underdog. And even with two chances of hitting his straight, there was no help coming for him on this hand.
