Personally I thoroughly dislike all forms of tournaments. Just too much luck-boxing going on. Just look at this field: Jungleman & Isildur stand out a mile. Haxton, maybe Durr & Ivey are next in line. After that there is a huge gap imo. Sit any of these names down in heads up cash with Isildur or the Jungleman for a few k of hands and they will be badly r**ed. Yet one of them will likely win this thing. It's just wrongness. Heads up is the purest form of poker but not with this one buy-in knockout structure. If they all had say 5 buy-ins each game (or something resembling the structure for the recent online HU challenge) then the cream would have a much higher chance of rising to the top. As it stands it's just muck & bullets and the one who wins 4 flips in a row will take this down. I just can't take it seriously tbh as any kind of guide to skill level.

Just because they don't all play online, doesn't mean they can't hold their own.

It's an invitational for television. It doesn't mean the winner is the best HU NLH player ever. Unless the winner is Isildur...:Whistling:

i think there is some good competition, and dont understand why just isildur and jungleman are so much in front..if that was the case,i am sure cates would play day and night...i think there is more then 20 players capable to handle and they are really great players...

Cheers guys, but I really do think there is a huge gap between the two I gave special mention to and most of the others.

They are on another planet to 90% of this field at HU NLH. It really is true.

Exactly. NBC doesn't put on this event to determine who the best HU player on the planet is. Everyone knows its a single elimination sng format and winning it doesn't make you a great HU player. Some pretty terrible players have won it before.

As far as poker exposure on a network TV station, this is as big as it gets. It is shown in the middle of the day on the weekend instead of at 2am on weekdays like PAD. They didn't have it last year, I thought it was gone for good, it's a very positive sign that it's back.

To justify the time slot and attract a wider audience, they invite who they think people want to watch, not the best HU players. Catering to a wide audience instead of a poker obsessed one is a common theme in poker programming, but it doesn't stop people here from complaining about it every time.

We should be grateful. If they invited the 64 best HU players in the world, no one but people like us would watch. Sure, it'd be great TV for us, but it wouldn't be on in the middle of the day and it wouldn't attract any new players, which is what we should all want.

True.

If you asked any player in this line-up to sit for say 2,500 hands of HU NLH with 5 buy-ins behind (to busto or who is ahead after 2.5k hands) against Isildur or Jungleman with 500k at stake the absolute reality is that they would all say no quicker than Blom will 3 bet from the BB in a 4 handed game.

I say all with the exception of probably Haxton & Durr and possibly, only possibly, Ivey.

This is absolute fact. No way would any of them do it.

So then. Press the pause button and think about it. Why wouldn't they do it? Press the pause button again. Why might they not do it?

Hmmmmm.

I would agree if it was played online but this is live. I don't give for granted isildur and jungleman have an edge live on everyone else.

For example, Isildur can complain as much as he want that people don't 3x it and limp the button, but cannot leave.

I think online players greatly underestimate the old timers Huck Seed, Seidel, Esfandiari.....

Sure they would probably beat them 4 tables HU but live these guys have been at the tables for 20 years picking up tells and experience. 1 table man to man vs. online geek infront of computer, im going with experience. Huck for the win.
