One Last Chance - My Poker Blog
One Last Chance - My Poker Blog
Howdy, my name is Chris, im 20 years old and im from Australia. I decided to start this blog for two reasons, the first is for analysis and support from fellow card members and the second is for a general shout out and realistic look for myself and people around my age group. So i went to a private school and was a bright student, i studied hard, did challenging subjects, did well in my final schooling results. I went to University, and then very early into my Uni career I discovered poker, poker slowly destroyed my University aspirations, i went from great university grades to struggling to pass and not even bothering to rock up to exams, i was stupidly hooked on a game, and naivly believed i could go professional. I've now dropped out of my course and am working doing a job 'well below my expectations' according to my father (in a nicer format). Time and time again i've heard from the closest people to me of how I've got to pull my life together and i've stupidly ignored them and never told them about my poker aspirations. All my time was shifted towards poker study and playing. I've been playing poker now for around 3 years, and if you havent noticed, im still as broke as i was when i finished school, except all of my peers are well into/ finishing their degrees. The main reason i havent won at poker is a cricital reason....tilt. I am a horrible, horrible tilter. I started a challenge once, playing to management with sng's and mtts. I turned $50 into $2700 within two months, it took hard work, commitment and honesty of myself. Thats until i changed over to cash games, i won around $800 playing good solid poker and running well, and then the cards changed, and so did my attitude, within 2 weeks i was flat broke, i'd burnted $3500 in cash games playing tilted as all hell and just being stubborn about my game. This has happened countless times and i just dont seem to learn...so i figured with some of my saved up some cash i will deposit $1500, and this $1500 will be the last i spend for my poker aspiration, because realistically when i look at my life, im on my ***, but the race isnt over, i still have time to catch up and get on with my life, im 20 and im glad im not 30 in the same position. I also urge others of you in similar positions to have a realistic look at your life and do the same!! I ask you people some of the best ways to avoid my tilt is? I just think, a non negotiable is when i lose two buy ins within 5 minutes, or lose a big pot as favourite is to take a 5 minute break (this i believe was critical to my mtt/sng success, the intervals between tournaments.) Poker has changed over the past 5 years when say Dwan started, the level of poker has risen incredibly and it just takes so much more to build a bankroll. My tilt is some epic edge towards others players and if i cant control it than ill give the game up. I trust my poker game, ive worked to hard on it to not believe im a profitable player (not on tilt), so im starting with 25/50c heads up, probably one table till im comfortable changing. You might ask why $1500 and not $50, and the reason is that ive proved that i can beat micro stakes when committed, i just dont want to grind through it again... This $1500 should go through within the next few days, so ill let you guys know when it has started and ill keep you guys updated, if i lose it, ive told myself thats its over, if this doesnt motivate me then nothing will...i may be 2.5 years behind my peers now, but hey, the lessons ive learnt from poker are arguably worth it. Look forward to your input. Doon

thanks mate, i think for the record i should have pointed out that i also hated my course, it wasnt as if i dropped out and thought i could go pro, i figured i would work and play poker, and see if i would change courses / get a job etc....so for the record that wasnt my intention of dropping out of uni, although poker had some influence upon it, a huge distraction

RE: One Last Chance - My Poker Blog
just my 2 cents concerning tilt: i think the most important is to react EARLY ENOUGH. when you are really tilted (lets say lost 4 buy ins in 5 minutes) you are lost. you have to set your finish line a lot earlier when you still have control. this depends from player to player according to me this is when i lose 2 buyin in a short time i go on sitout and have a short walk no matter where the button is at the moment.
p.s.: sometimes when im drunk i dont react properly and run into tilt also.... ;-)))
