Thinking about playing poker professionally
Hi everybody, a common topic that has been probably been talked about multiple times, but I REALLY want to know exactly what it takes from people who are really experienced, or maybe not even experienced someonewho has been through a lot with poker for maybe a couple of years or even those who are somewhat new to the games. Please write down your skype/add me on skype my sn is:INCOMPLETEFOCUS so we can discuss more and get to know eachother, please and thank you for your time.
I kind of want to ask some broad questions if some people do not have enough time to communicate with me on skype such as:
How much are you making per month?
How do expenses with real life cut with poker expenses? (like how do you even out the two)?
How long did it take to you decide to become a professional?
or for the people who are NOT professional poker players but really enjoy the game.
How long have you been playing the game of poker?
What limit do you play? How is the variance like? what is your exact winrate over the last 100k hands? why are you not playing higher?
Again add me on skype or write down your skype below please and i'll make sure to add you.

RE: Thinking about playing poker professionally
Have a good amount of money when you begin.
Never play low stakes, always play 5-10 or higher.
Practice, and remember your gambling for a living. Your not going to win every day/month/year etc.
If you can't play high stakes, 5-10 and above then forget it you will make more money and min wage job (not a joke)
Stick with it, but most def don't make it the number 1 thing in your life.
GL.

RE: Thinking about playing poker professionally
Hi freeze thank you for your response what is considered "a good amount of money"
Why is playing stakes lower then 5-10 considered bad what was your experience behind it?
And I don't see much games at 5-10/higher
are you a professional or a recreational player or an aspiring professional?
do you have a skype?

RE: Thinking about playing poker professionally
Gas, Rent Utilities, lifestyle.
Thats costs me around 5k a Month.
I either lose or win Around 15-20k a Month.
I am talking live btw. If you don't live near a cardroom then I guess grind away online.
If you wanna be a "pro" then you gotta be able to play 5-10 or above.
If you wanna play 2-3 1-2 then I would suggest getting a decent paying job, because you will fare much better. You will have credit to buy a car, a house etc you can actually get a loan!
When your a pro, You don't have a steady income or anything like that, so you need to make a lot of money to afford the things you are scheming of obtaining.
You will either get ******r rich, or go busto like everyone else whos tried b4 u.
If you wanna ask deeper questions shoot me a PM

RE: Thinking about playing poker professionally
Ahh i see that is quite expensive, no i am not talking about live majority of my concerns is about playing onlineI don't live anywhere near a casino. how do you really cope with having a 15-20k losing month/ 15-20k winning month? does that not take an emotional toll on you? in terms of not having a balance or control of your winning and losing months is there a certain amount you stash away to pay for rent just incase you don't have a winning month and how do you balance the two bills and poker. thanks

Yea, you do feel like commiting suicide or question why you put yourself through what you do many times.
But then you relize the only way to make your money back is keep going.
And be totally completly honest, after about a year of wild emotional swings, nothing phases you.
It doesn't effect your mental state whether your up 50k or down 50k that month.

RE: Thinking about playing poker professionally
I've been doing this on and off for 7 years now.
If I would have stayed in my fathers business, I would be 10000000000x better off than I am now.
But I love to gamble. I love to drink/do drugs on the job. Party all night and then go to work at 4 Pm... etc.
And plus, I'm gonna get whatever he worked for when he dies, so why not be a fk up? =]

RE: Thinking about playing poker professionally
The point of playing 5/10 or higher is mainly because of the ridiculous rake that card rooms take.. I live about 15 mins from Commerce and Bicycle Casino and the first actually profitable game for any skill level is the 5/10 spread game $500-$1500 buy in.. The other lower games you are forced to buy in short stacked from like 20bb-33bb or so its beyond stupid and on top of that they take alot of rake.. The rake becomes a smaller % at 5/10 specially when you can sit 50-150bb deep..
But if you play online you should start at 50nl minimum, and there are a number of other things you should know, which most of you can prob find on 2+2 etc.. rake is pretty brutal at the lower limits specially when up against good players, and its still tough to beat the rake vs break even players.. so unless you can play 12-25 tables like that math wizz's you might want to pick your spots carefully
