“Esvedra” is a high stakes online PLO player who is rumored to be Canadian billionaire and Cirque du Soleil CEO Guy Laliberte. However, the rumor hasn’t been confirmed, so Esvedra is still an unknown player at this point. One thing that is confirmed is that Esvedra hasn’t had much success in the nosebleeds, which we’ll cover below.
HighStakesDB first found Esvedra in the summer of 2010 after he lost $100k throughout May and June. But this was only the beginning because he lost over $1.2 million in July and August. From here, the losses have been less sharp, but they’ve still continued. Esvedra dropped almost $400k from September, 2010 to the beginning of March, 2011. Following these losses, he also racked up another $900k in losses from March until the summer of 2011. In all, he has lost about $2.7 million since showing up on HighStakesDB.
As for the stakes that Esvedra plays, he usually sits in on PLO games ranging from $200/$400 to $500/$1,000. In fact, all of his noteworthy sessions have come within this range of stakes. On May 24th, 2011, Esvedra tangled with newly-relocated Canadian Cole South and Russian pro Alexey “NoPasaran” Makarov. South ended up winning $100k off of Esvedra, while NoPasaran earned a $145k profit. This wasn’t the only money that Makarov won off of Esvedra since he also earned $227k during their June 13th, 2011 heads-up session.
Not everything has been about losing for Esvedra because he’s also won some big hands against some of the best players in the world. In a May 21st, 2011 PLO session against “FinnishNightmre,” “LokoIsBack,” Patrik Antonius, “skjervoy” and NoPasaran, he 4-bet his entire $103,415 stack against Patrik Antonius on the flop. When Antonius called, Esvedra flipped over Ac-Jd-As-9h on a board of Th-Ah-7c, while Antonius had 8h-7h-7d-6d. The turn and river didn’t improve either player’s hand, and Esvedra won $215,327 with a set of aces.
