Rob Akery - The English Lion That Roared

Transferring his work ethic from Age of Empire spin-off Age of Mythology, Englands Rob Akery carved out a successful poker career for several years, with the online highstakes cash games to the forefront…but it was also a bit of a rollercoaster ride for Vaga_Lion as we will see!

Taking his nickname Vaga_Lion from his world-leading RTS days as ‘Vagabond Lion’, Akery turned his attention to poker as the game started to boom after Chris Moneymaker’s 2003 WSOP Main Event victory.

"It just made me realize you can actually get really good at something if you put in the time," he explained, adding: "Poker seemed like a good one to put a lot of time into."

It would be the end of 2007 before we would see Akery playing big and scoring bigger in the live arena, but that coincided with his introduction to the online high stakes game – and Full Tilt at the time took no prisoners…

If 2009 was an excellent year for the young Bristolian, then the latter half of the following year was disastrous – a $1.4million plunge that coincided with a sudden disappearance from the live tournament winner’s lists…

With Black Friday out of the way, though, attention switched to the biggest games on PokerStars in 2011 – and Vaga_Lion on the red spade site roared his way back into the black with a brace of very profitable years…

The following pot at almost $200k tops the list for Akery, $200/400 PLO with Jens Jeans89 Kyllönen one of those on the receiving end of busted flush draws running into quads!

A close to $1million year in 2012 was the last time we saw Vaga_Lion put in any serious volume on PokerStars, and the same goes for his live poker career.

Still sitting inside the top 100 live tournament earners in his native England, Akery topped out at $1,291,751 on the Hendon Mob listings, starting with a six-figure score in his home town for coming 2nd in the Great British Poker Tour Final.

At the other end of his shortish but very lively poker days he scored £205,500 ($321,194) for his 3rd spot behind notable crushers Philipp Gruissem and Igor Kurganov at the season 8 EPT/UKIPT in London’s Hilton Metropole Hotel.

With success in online MTT’s as well, Rob Vaga_Lion Akery fully deserves his spot among poker’s all-round success stories!
