Adrian Mateos Wins EPT Prague €10k Opener For €177,500

Adrian Mateos took down the opening €10k event of the PokerStars EPT Prague series, winning €177,500 ($196,304) just two weeks after his massive double at the partypoker MILLIONS in the Bahamas.

The Spaniard ended day one in the middle of the pack, half the entries busting and an extra seven entering on day two to make it 61 runners in total, making it €591,700 in the prizepool to be shared among the final eight players.

That octet would include some famous names, partypoker Team pro Bertrand 'ElkY' Grospelier and Turkey’s number one all-time tournament pro Orpen Kisacikoglu among them.

Matthias Eibinger would prove to be the unfortunate bubble boy, falling in 9th spot at the hands of Japan’s Tsugunari Toma, himself closing in on his nation’s top spot with a 6th place finish worth €37,870.

Eibinger: A♣ K♥
Toma: A♥ 9♠
Board: 5♣ 3♠ A♠ 9♥ 8♦

Grospelier would bust in 5th despite flopping a set of queens, the flop also bringing Derek Ip a full house…

Ip: J♠ J♦
Grospelier: A♥ Q♣
Board: Q♥ Q♦ J♥ 4♣ 5♦

… but a re-run of almost exactly the same hand shortly afterwards against Mateos would see Ip fall in 3rd for €82,840

Mateos: A♦ Q♣
Ip: J♠ J♣
Board: 2♠ 9♠ 10♦ Q♠ 2♦

That left Mateos heads-up against Anton Yakuba, the young Russian already guaranteed the biggest cash of his career so far.

Pushing his chip lead, Mateos was likely surprised to see his two-pair shove on the river called by Yakuba with only king high, who still had 20+ BBs to his name.

For the Spaniard it was yet another victory, bringing him ever closer to that magical $20million career tournament earnings mark, after his partypoker Main Event and SHR triumphs last month in the Bahamas worth a combined $1,683,000.

Final results

1 Adrian Mateos €177,500

5 Bertrand Grospellier €48,520
