It’s been a few years since Galfond’s OMGClayAiken online persona struck the fear of God into his fellow nosebleed pros, and the Galfond Challenge is a return to the days of the infamous Durrrr Challenge that saw Tom 'durrrr' Dwan battle with Patrik Antonius and Daniel 'Jungleman' Cates.

The Galfond-Perkins battle will be played on Galfond’s new RIO poker site and livestreamed on Twitch, over 50,000 hands at $100/$200 PLO.

Should either side reach a $400k profit, the match ends – Galfond to pay an extra $800k if he is on the losing side, while Perkins stands to lose an extra $200k if he fails to topple the former endgame boss.

The ‘side’ part is important, as Perkins will be allowed to ‘tag team’ Galfond, sending in members of his Thirst Lounge crew if the going gets too tough for him.

Perkins has extremely deep pockets, of course, the former hedgefund guru a regular at the biggest buy-in tournaments and cash games.

Galfond is hardly struggling for money either, his $8million or so from online nosebleeds supplemented by almost $3million live tournament cashes.

As for who will come out on top in the first Galfond Challenge, it would be a naïve person indeed who didn’t hugely favour Galfond – and the odds he is offering reflect that.

Galfond has admitted the challenge is a promotional venture for his Run It Once site, struggling to get the player numbers and gameplay up to a decent level, but for poker fans it’s a must-watch.

It’s unlikely Galfond will follow up with a match against the very best players in the world, but we live in hope.
