Phil Galfond Down More Than €500,000 in PLO Challenge Match

With just 10 days of his PLO Challenge match against VeniVidi1993 completed, Phil Galfond is down a staggering €553,516.95, yesterday seeing the Run It Once boss lose another €100k session.

By: Andrew Burnett

It has been a brutal start to the first of six matches Galfond has arranged to promote his site, the OG known as OMGClayAiken in his heyday winning only one of the ten sessions they have played so far.

That single daily win was for €2,615.26, only 13bb in the €100/€200 PLO matchup, with Galfond’s biggest single loss coming on day 5, a €155,063.52 defeat.

The two have fought out less than 7000 of the proposed 25,000 hands, and so far Galfond is running at a horrendous -€80.89 loss per hand.

The vagaries and swings of heads-up PLO (HUPLO) are well-known and would normally make such losses just part and parcel of the game, but the manner of Galfond’s losing seems to show that VeniVidi is much stronger than anyone gave him credit for.

The pundits in the poker forums have been giving their two cents worth, a selection of the 2plus2 comments below:

- ‘I think this is really bad even though I believe Phil's net worth is 20mil. It's been only 7k hands out of 25k and it looks like venividi has found his leaks and is crushing him big time. Actionfreak challenge might be similar. Now I really think he should consider ending the challenge by paying that sidebet.’ - Laaksolahti

- ‘Tough spot for Phil. Pulling out is probably the best option, but looks bad, especially in his first challenge. Keep playing and losing a bunch more money, also not great. His only Hail Mary play is to keep playing and hope the deck hits him very hard.’ - thethethe

- ‘Galfond is obviously a nice guy, but also very stubborn and resistant to advice, as he is so independent minded and sure he is right and better informed than others. This mindset can be very expensive!’ - Jay Why

Not everyone is filled with doom and gloom, however, with some posters rooting for a big comeback in the days ahead…

- ‘Galfond will turn this around!!' - Gerrard4

- ‘Phil had a run today towards the end where he couldn't miss.’ Hopefully he can start a day like that and book a win!’GazzyB123

A sidebet of Galfond’s €200k against VV1993’s €100k also part of the equation, which Phil would forfeit if he withdraws from the battle.

It’s unlikely a player of Phil’s stature would admit to such a defeat unless the losses reached serious proportions, but he’ll have to find a way to turn things around soon.

Galfond has also arranged battles with Bill Perkins, Brandon Adams, Chance Kornuth, Action Freak and Dan 'Jungleman' Cates, at least some of those where he would be the favourite to come out on top.

Below is a breakdown of the results so far:
