The Story Of Finnish Online Poker Superstar Jens 'Jeans89' Kyllonen

Jeans89, aka Jens Kyllönen, is a Finnish poker player who made his millions during the so called golden years of poker, around 2010. Unlike a lot of other professionals, Jeans89 amassed a huge bankroll early on in his career and has said in the past that he has never made an online deposit, instead building from freerolls. At the age of 20, he won an EPT in Copenhagen for over $1 million dollars, and has continued to crush ever since.

After kicking down the door at the live scene, Jeans89 played a lot of his high stakes volume on sites such as Full Tilt Poker and PokerStars. He immediately found success, and in his first year on PokerStars he made over $1 million, according to our database. To date, he has won just under $6 million on PokerStars playing PLO and NLHE and is the biggest high stakes winner on the site since 2010.

At first, Jeans89 started playing NLHE cash games but quickly made the jump following early success and has primarily focused on becoming a PLO player expert. He has battled with some of the elites such as, Isildur1, MrSweets28 and Urindanger. Speaking on his rise through the ranks with, this interview gives you an insight into Jeans’ life:

However, Jens had recognised early on that he was miles ahead of everyone else and kept his secret close to home. Although poker was changing at the time, and the poker market was declining as the years went on, with players having so much access to online content. Jeans89 decided that it was time to branch into other ideas outwith poker:

‘I felt that two or three years ago, I was so far ahead of the curve that it would have been stupid of me to show the things that I was doing, because I was doing a lot of things that people hadn’t figured out. But nowadays, there is so much information out there and so many other good players make videos. I don’t feel like there is some “super secret” thing that I’m doing which others don’t know about. I’m not worried in that way.’

‘I was also recently thinking about buying a very sick apartment here in Finland, it’s probably the sickest apartment that exists here. That would have been most of my bankroll, so I figured I needed to get extra money from anywhere I could. So that gave me the motivation. However, I figured (buying the apartment) wouldn’t be the most sensible thing to do with how the poker market is looking. So, perhaps I’ll wait for a few years first.’

The man is fascinating to say the least. Back in 2012, it was allegedly said that Jens bought a space trip worth $160k from Virgin Galactic. He told reporters:

"I've always been fascinated with space and now that I have the opportunity to be within the first people going I just felt like I had to do it."

He mentioned that this trip would take place in 2014, but eventually cancelled the trip for a number of reasons. One was that the timing wasn’t taken too seriously and Jens felt that the experience sounded a little unprofessional. Another being that one of two pilots on the test spaceship that was to be suggested for the trip to space died the previous year. Sounds like a pretty reasonable response on Jens’ part.

But it was not the only part of the game that was wearing thin for Jens. After achieving his monetary goals, the novelty was wearing off and Jeans89 said he was lacking drive due to it. He also claimed that having to grind at night time conflicted with his wife coming in from school, and that it was not the most suitable manner of living in general any more.

Despite Jeans89’s baller lifestyle, he, like many others, decided it was time to take a break from the game and announced his retirement by 2017. He told a finnish tabloid newspaper that “Life is after all, quite short”, and that he would “like to try something else”. Since 2017, he has enrolled in Hanken School of Economics in Helsinki,  where he enrolled in a finance course. We’re sure he’ll be clued up on that subject!

Unfortunately these days, Jens spends most of his time away from the felt and is seen dabbling on to the live scene from time to time. We will almost certainly be on the lookout for his return with him having had such a killer career.
