Daniel Negreanu Demands All Poker Rooms Shutdown Due to CoronaVirus Scares

Daniel Negreanu has demanded that all live poker rooms shut down, claiming that poker tables are the most infectious environment imaginable for the spread of the coronavirus and its deadly Covid-19 disease…

KidPoker’s call for a complete shutdown comes as the death toll of the new strain of flu approaches 5000 across 118 countries, many nations imposing strict restrictions on travel and gatherings.

Declared a pandemic this week by the World Health Organisation (WHO), the USA saw its 29th death related to the virus, and the poker community saw its first big tournament on US soil cancelled.

The 2020 World Poker Tour DeepStacks due to be held in Maryland called off its Main Event due to be held next week, although it may be held later in the year.

Across Europe and the rest of the world, many poker events have been called off – Triton SHR Series in Jeju, South Korea the first, and followed recently by WPT Barcelona, the Irish Poker Open in Dublin, 888Poker LIVE in Bucharest, Romania and the Unibet Deep Stack Poker Open in Aix en Provence, France.

Kings Casino in Rozvadov is running its WSOP Circuit event, but Italian players have been banned, and with a state of emergency declared in the Czech Republic – the Germany and Austria borders due to be closed to all but essential travel – they may also yet be cancelled.

Negreanu’s ‘casino shutdown’ demands were met by the usual Twitter mixture of concern, ignorance and questionable humour

For once Daniel seemed happy to reply to his naysayers…

…but there were other concerns at how a shutdown would affect those in the industry

It’s not clear how poker or the casino industry would handle a complete closure, but with sporting events such as the NHL, MLB NCAA, as well as the NBA also announcing postponements and cancellations, it may be time to follow the sporting lead.
