Massive Online Sunday Grind as CoronaVirus Shuts Down Live Poker

As expected because of the coronavirus shutdown of many live poker venues and tournaments, the Sunday online grind saw massive numbers turn up to play – with Jeff Gross and Bill Perkins among those sharing in the bumper prizemoney.

That well-known pair were playing in the $5200 partypoker Big Game, the first SHR on the first day of the site’s POWERFEST Series, and it saw double its usual number of entries, 208 runners chasing close to $200k for the top spot.

Sundaynightking had to make do with a lesser title as he came in 14th for close to $14k, with CalmDownMan pocketing a big payday as usual in 10th place for $16,792.

partypoker Team pro and well-respected streamer Jeff 'JeffGross' Gross was enjoying his final table run…

…and the eventual 7th place finish was worth a healthy $29,245, always a nice way to start a 2-week series.

Bill 'gastrader' Perkins went even better, finishing 5th for more than $50k, with Lone1 in 3rd for a hair’s-breadth under six-figures.

That left RainMan74 and SpanishFly to fight it out for top honours, and it saw the Dustin Hoffman-fan having to settle for 2nd and a massive $139,632 cash.

SpanishFly took the Big Game title and $192,359, enough to buy as much of the fabled ointment as he likes.

Event 2 on the POWERFEST schedule was the $1050 buy-in, $200k GTD High Roller, and again the entries almost doubled the prizefund, with 365 players chasing $70k up top.

This time there were very few of the well-known faces, or names rather, at the deep end, although StrawberryGirl has been making a name for herself in recent weeks, yesterday’s 7th place finish and $9307 boosting that profile.

Awesam and Xingyun8 were the duo left to battle heads-up for the Powerfest bragging rights, and the Chinese player won out, pocketing $70,810, with Awesam runner-up for $51,100.

Over on Americas CardRoom it was a similar story as poker players stuck to the online rooms for their weekend fix, highstakes amateur Paul 'topdollarman' Newey among them.

The $200k GTD on ACR saw 373 entries, a big boost to the prizepool, and that meant seven 5-figure cashes up for grabs, Whoareya1 taking the first of those for $12,682.

Millionaire businessman and well-known highroller Newey made it all the way to 3rd for a $41,030 pocket money boost, and Burberry2 saw off CheersFive to land the $72,175 top prize, the runner-up taking $54,085 for an excellent run.

The ACR Sunday Special runs every week with a $125k guarantee, but that number was blown away by 1521 entries yesterday, creating a $304,200 prizefund, meaning more than $50k up top.

Running deep were the amusingly-named duo of SmellMyMartinFinger (11th for $2646) and DeadMoneyDick (9th for $3285) while HarryPottersTaint adding a $20k+ 4th place to last month’s Sunday PLO podium finish.

Heads-up saw GusorConstantine take down jigmog7 for a $51,622 payout, $38,025 going to the runner-up.

Over on PokerStars there was a massive turnout for the warm-up to next weekend’s 14th Anniversary edition of the Sunday Millions, some 13,579 entries to the $109 buy-in tournament.

The $1,357,900 prizepool saw more than 2400 players in the money, including 2014 WSOP Main Event winner Martin 'M.nosbocaJ' Jacobson, and English pro Jake 'jakecody' Cody, but it was a Canadian duo who landed the biggest prizes.

Momess and blue70mach1 battled heads-up for the title and it was blue70mach1 who took down the impressive $131,418 top prize, his rival and countryman Momess taking $95,361 as runner-up.

1 blue70mach1 $131,418
2 Momess $95,361
3 Geraldo 'GeraldoCesar' Cesar Neto $69,203
4 Anton 'anteen' Bertilsson $50,221
5 pececada $36,445
6 HS toaster $26,448
