Galfond Takes Victory and €86,870 in Jungleman Mini-Challenge

Jungleman Dan Cates will have to swallow his pride and make a video explaining why Phil Galfond is the better man after losing his PLO Challenge mini-match against the RunItOnce boss yesterday.

The pair battled it out at stakes of €100/€200 across 754 hands – a warm-up for their real PLO Challenge set to take place soon – and the sidebet was an interesting one.

Rather than money, a ‘bragging rights in reverse’ was on the table – the loser having to tell the poker world why the other was the better man.

Galfond was playing as Mr Falcon, a nickname some might not understand, but which goes back to the start of this year – Jungleman describing his opponent in glowing terms…

One of the first big pots of the day went Jungleman’s way – a nasty river costing Phil a stack after he laid a trap on the flop and got all the chips in on the turn, only for a less-than-happy ending

A little while later and Jungleman Dan landed another pot in the €50k territory, Galfond with the bigger draw as the chips went in but the board bricking out.

Both men were streaming the match, but while Galfond’s was a fairly subdued commentary, Jungleman – hosted by Jeff GrossPoker – was a typically bizarre affair.

Two-tabling against a fellow legend of the game, Cates still found time to describe the attributes of the perfect supervillain, for example…

Even as the match turned against him, Jungleman retained his sense of humour.

“The poker gods have seen the error of my ways and they’re taking it out on the supervillain – I need some dark energy,” one of the classic lines you’re unlikely to find anywhere else in the game.

By the time the session came to an end, some 754 hands had been played and Galfond had booked yet another win, this time for €86,870.52.

Phil could also revel in the knowledge that his illustrious opponent would have to kowtow with a sidebet video extolling his virtues – something a lot of people are looking forward to, based on Jungleman’s commentary technique.
