Steve O’Dwyer wins SCOOP $25k SHR for $521,598

Steve O Dwyer, aka Mr. Tim Caum, has taken down the SCOOP $25k Super High Roller on PokerStars, a victory worth $521,598 after seeing off a star-studded final table…

The 89 entries had been whittled down to just ten by the end of day one, Canadian highroller specialist Tim 'Tim0thee' Adams making the paid spots but departing in 11th.

When play resumed, it was Ben 'Sauce123' Sulsky who would bubble the final table, pocketing the same $55,088 payout as Adams after his shortstack shove was rivered by O’Dwyer.

Among the notables left in the chase for a share of the $2,182,725 prizepool were Fedor 'CrownUpGuy' Holz, Talal 'raidalot' Shakerchi and a name that may not be too familiar but really deserves to be - Chun Lei 'SamRostan' Zhou.

Macau-resident Zhou was revealed back in 2014 as one of the biggest losers in the online nosebleed cash games, a close to $15million hole that is second only to Gus Hansen’s abominable record.

Yesterday saw him claw some of that back, but first there was a German duo hitting the rails, Fedor Holz out in 8th spot after facing a quandary that few others would understand…

Fellow German Ole 'wizowizo' Schemion hit the rail next, his $111,115 cash the first 6-figure payout of the final table, and it was a remarkable hand that sealed his fate…

O’Dwyer made a play from the big blind after a raise and re-raise from Schemion and Hungary’s Andras 'probirs' Nemeth, and when the chips had all gone in, Nemeth was in prime position to bust two dangerous opponents…

Nemeth: A♠ A♦
Schemion: K♥ K♣
O’Dwyer: A♥ Q♦

The flop was a brutal one, however…

Flop: Q♣ Q♠ J♠

…leaving very little for Schemion to hope for, the board bricking to send the German packing, with O’Dwyer tripling up.

Turn: 3♦
River: 7♠

After Russia’s Vyacheslav 'VbV1990' Buldygin took $143,781 for 6th place, England’s Talal Shakerchi was hoping he could crack aces too, but Zhou’s pocket rockets held up, raidalot having to settle for 5th place and $186,049.

Portugal’s Joao 'Naza114' Vieira bagged 4th place and $240,744, while Chun Lei 'SamRostan' Zhou must have hoped for a crucial double-up shortly afterwards when he defended his big blind with a stellar hand…

Zhou: A♣ J♥
Nemeth: Q♠ 2♠

Lady Luck or Lord Variance perhaps had other ideas, with Nemeth hitting both the flop and an unnecessary river to announce Zhou’s 3rd place exit, worth $311,517.

Board: 10♠ 2♥ 2♣ 4♦ Q♦

That left two of the world’s elite highroller pros to fight it out, a $118k difference between the first and second place prizemoney.

For Nemeth, holding a 2-1 chip lead, it was to be a rather disastrous heads-up affair – firstly losing the lead, then the better side of a race  and finally making a hero call that backfired for the last of his chips.

Nemeth: A♠ K♣
O’Dwyer: K♠ 10♥
Board: 2♠ 7♣ 4♥ 7♠ 10♦

That rivered pair meant O’Dwyer took the SCOOP title and $521,598, with Nemeth pocketing just over $400,000 for his runner-up finish.
