Sexton spent 15 years with the WPT, matching his 15 cashes that included winning the 2016 WPT Montreal Main Event for $317,896, shortly before he parted ways to rejoin partypoker.

In that time he was not only a tireless ambassador and advocate for the WPT brand, but also its very public face with his commentary role alongside Vince van Patten.

In a blog post this week on partypoker, the red diamond site currently running the WPT World Online Championships, Sexton expressed his surprise and great pleasure at the announcement.

“I never thought anything in poker could ever exceed being inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame but this week, I was proven wrong,” wrote Sexton.

He added: “To me, this is the highest honor I could ever receive in poker. 'Thank you' WPT for this truly incredible recognition.”

The announcement from the WPT read: “World Poker Tour® is proud to announce the WPT® Champions Cup, bearing the names of WPT Champions Club members from all 18 seasons, will be officially renamed the 'Mike Sexton WPT Champions Cup' in honor of the long-time WPT Commentator and Champion.”

Adam Pliska, CEO of the World Poker Tour, said: “The WPT Family is proud to bestow this tribute and privilege to the greatest poker ambassador the world has ever known.”

He added: “Mike Sexton embodies everything the World Poker Tour stands for. His class at the table, humility towards fans of the game, travel to all corners of the globe, and his contributions away from the table have all benefited the game we love. In accordance with his incredible work for the World Poker Tour and the entire poker community, I can think of no better way to honor Mike’s legacy than to award the WPT Champions Cup in his name.”

Of his own Main Event victory that ensured his name was already be on the trophy, Sexton stated: “I was thrilled to get my name on the WPT Champions Cup in Montreal in 2016. In 15 seasons in the WPT commentator booth, I can attest first-hand how difficult it is to win a WPT Main Event.”

The WPT release also notes that, 288 unique WPT Champions are listed alongside Sexton on the WPT Champions Cup, including Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu, four-time WPT Champion Darren Elias, and current WPT Commentator Tony Dunst.’

Five more names will be added to the trophy from the ongoing WPTWOC on partypoker and we will be bringing you all the best of the action here on HighStakesDB.
