Daniel Negreanu shocks Doug Polk with $222k Win in Grudge Match

Daniel Negreanu hammered his archrival Doug Polk, landing a $222,000 session win to open up a four buy-in overall lead in the Grudge Match of the Century…

HeadsUp No Limit Hold’em (HUNL) expert Polk had been installed as the firm favourite to smash his foe off the table in their highstakes Grudge Match, but the match hasn’t gone to plan so far, Negreanu proving to be much more competitive than expected.

Yesterday saw the best session yet for DNegs, just one day after the match itself appeared to be in some serious trouble, after Bill Perkins sparked a huge row over the rules.

Eventually things were smoothed over, although the aftershock will likely rumble on for some time, as we’ll see later, but to the fans’ relief the duelling duo resumed their battle…

It didn’t take long for the first big pot of the day to arrive, and it was clear that Daniel had got over his fear of Polk’s big river bets, snapping off a bluff for the first stack of the day…

Negreanu: 10♠ K♦
Polk: J♥ A♣
Board: K♥ 5♣ 8♦ Q♥ 7♣

…and that was followed up almost immediately with another stack going to DNegs, this time Polk snapping off a river check-shove from Daniel and receiving the bad news…

Negreanu: Q♥ K♣
Polk: J♥ 10♥
Board: K♥ 10♦ 5♥ 2♦ 4♠

That seemed to be the story of the day, a reversal of some other sessions, as Polk won plenty of smaller pots but Negreanu reeled in the big ones, including a $40k pot where both players had flopped the diamond flush.

It was a long session, and the cards just kept hitting Negreanu in the face, the following hand not unusual, with DNegs again picking off the bluff.

Polk: J♠  9♦

Negreanu had apparently predicted the huge winning session, tweeting: “Wrote in my journal this morning that I was going to win $218k in today’s session. Ended up winning $222k and am back in the lead in a seesaw battle!”

Polk on the other hand was somewhat gloomier, his travails not just on the tables, tweeting: “Lose 220k in a session to man flatting QQ vs an open, and then go on twitter and have Bilzerian talking shit. This is my life now.”

That, if things escalate enough, could see the next big Grudge Match…
