Daniel Negreanu Squeaks Out Win in Grudge Match After Scooping $185k Pot

Daniel Negreanu saved himself from a huge loss by landing a late monster pot, emerging from session 14 of his highstakes grudge match against Doug Polk with a small win…

By: Andrew Burnett

If that makes it sound like Negreanu was lucky in yesterday’s session, it should be pointed out that the session was far from fortunate for the Canadian GGPoker ambassador, even Doug Polk admitting, the hand above notwithstanding: “absolutely cannot miss atm.”

That tweet was connected to the following hand, where the river once again favoured the Upswing Poker boss…

Polk: 9♣ 9♥
Negreanu: K♦ 7♦
Flop: 2♣ 5♣ K♥
Turn: K♣
River: 9♦

…and that was $172,637 sliding across to Polk on one of the two WSOP.com tables the pair are fighting out their $200/$400 HUNL match on.

The action came thick and fast throughout the almost 800-hand session, with the first stack-sized pot going Polk’s way with yet another river bad beat, this time Negreanu hitting…and still losing…

Polk: J♣ 2♣
Negreanu: A♣ 5♠
Flop: Q♥ 6♣ 4♣
Turn: 3♣
River: 2♠

It didn’t all go Polk’s way, naturally, and once again he had nice things to say about Negreanu’s play, tweeting: “Swingy battle today. @RealKidPoker hung tough and came back,” to go with his Monday compliment: “Daniel is playing much better imo, lots of new moves.”

Negreanu of course understands that the ‘luck factor’, or more accurately variance, works both ways and isn’t always a bad thing…

With Polk starting the day up almost $580k, there were points when it looked like he might lose half of that, or go on to win as much again, but the swingy session ended with barely a third of a buy-in between them…

The players will be back in action tomorrow, Friday, and we’ll bring you all the best of the action right here!
