Tony G Challenges Phil Hellmuth to Heads Up Poker Grudge Match

A heads-up match between legendary poker motormouths Antanas Tony G Guoga and Phil Poker Brat Hellmuth could be on the cards after the Lithuanian businessman, politician and poker pro called out his old rival…

It seems as though everyone is gunning for big Phil, the Poker Brat also called out by Daniel Negreanu this week. The GGPoker ambassador was spurred into action by Hellmuth’s “disappointment” in DNegs’ play against Doug Polk in their recent Grudge Match.

Of course, Hellmuth was once very disappointed in Tony G’s behaviour, the Lithuanian-born, part Aussie-raised legend lying to Phil back in season 2 of PokerStars’ televised “Big Game”.

The irrepressible Tony claimed he was going all-in blind after Hellmuth had raised pre-flop, Hellmuth eventually taking him at his word and calling the all-in.

Tony G turned over A♥K♥, which dominated Hellmuth’s A♠J♦, and proceeded to cackle loudly at Hellmuth’s call.

“Oh, you lied,” said a surprised Phil.

“Of course I lied!” was Tony’s response, adding, “It’s poker Phil – what do you think this is?”

His calls this week for a charity showdown soon had PokerStars raising their hands to host a rematch, but Phil may be a hard man to pin down.

He has already challenged Doug Polk, looks like he might fancy the Negreanu battle, and recently spanked Antonio ‘The Magician’ Esfandiari three-times in a highstakes heads-up duel for $350k.

Hellmuth stated his impressive poker resume in several tweets yesterday, refuting the views of the “TYGAT (Top young guns at the time)" who said he was “done” at various stages in his career.

“In 2020, TYGAT says I’m done, but I won 28-out-of-31 televised cash games over 6 years. Haters hate, but they are not worthless: they FUEL me!!”

Whether that fuel will turn into victories and cold hard cash (for charity in Tony G’s case) remains to be seen, but it would be foolish to dismiss the 15-times WSOP bracelet winner in any match.
