Five Of The Most Famous Poker Players Of All Time

Poker games are some of the most popular casino games around the world but have developed a reputation for their complicated rules, game mechanics, and strategies. Despite this, many people have managed to master poker and become famous poker players. Here is a top five list of the most famous poker players of all time.

Doyle Brunson

Doyle Brunson is a now-retired poker player who played the game professionally for more than 50 years. Brunson is widely regarded as one of the best poker players, having won the World Series Of Poker (WSOP) Main Event twice and being the first-ever person to win $1 million in poker tournaments. Brunson has also released several books about poker, has been inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame, and is one of the few players to have won World Series Of Poker tournaments across four consecutive years. Brunson made his final poker appearance in 2018.

Phil Ivey

Phil Ivey is another well-known poker player who has won one World Poker Tour title and ten World Series Of Poker bracelets. Like Brunson, Ivey has been inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame but has faced several cheating allegations over punto banco and baccarat games. The famous poker player has also spoken on his poker origin story, claiming to have used a fake ID to sneak into poker rooms in Atlantic City, New Jersey, during his teenage years, earning him the nickname “No Home Jerome”.

Phil Ivey has also been the face of a controversial gambling advert for Full Tilt Poker, one of the biggest competitors to Sky Poker according to Sister Sites, which was banned shortly after its release for being too offensive.

Stu Ungar

Stu Ungar was a professional poker player who was widely regarded as one of the best Texas Hold’em players of all time. Ungar, whose life was loosely adapted into the 2003 film High Roller: The Stu Ungar Story, was one of two people in the world to have won the World Series Of Poker Main Event three times and was the only person to have won the Amarillo Slim’s Super Bowl Of Poker three times.

Ungar has broken numerous records but suffered later in life over drug addictions, ongoing debt, a divorce, and the suicide of his adopted son Richie. Ungar tragically committed suicide in November 1998 and died with no assets to his name. However, he will always be remembered as one of the most famous poker players of all time.

Antonio Esfandiari

Antonio Esfandiari is an Iranian professional poker player and, surprisingly, a former professional magician. Nicknamed The Magician, Esfandiari appeared in several poker television shows and has won numerous championships including two World Poker Tour championships and three World Series Of Poker bracelets. Esfandiari also broke a record with one of those World Series Of Poker bracelets, winning the second-largest single payout in history during 2012’s Big One For One Drop charity tournament.

Daniel Negreanu

Our final mention is Daniel Negreanu, a Canadian poker player who has won two World Poker Tour championships and six World Series Of Poker bracelets. Negreanu is the only person in the world to be named the World Series Of Poker Player Of The Year twice in 2004 and 2013, and has been inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame. According to Negreanu, he originally dreamed of becoming a professional snooker player before turning to poker at the age of 15, playing charity games, and participating in illegal tournaments.

There are plenty of other famous poker players, but we believe that the players we’ve listed above are some of the most well-known. Since poker is such a huge sport, it won’t be long before we start seeing some new legends appear!
