Shane "Shaniac" Schleger on Crack

Shane Schleger

According to a recent self-written article on slate.com, ex-Team PokerStars Online professional Shane ‘shaniac’ Schleger has been battling against an addiction to crack cocaine for the last 15 years.

The articulately written piece will no doubt come as a huge shock to many, as hard drugs – particularly in the modern day where a healthy lifestyle is considered a fundamental for a lot of poker professionals – are not usually (with maybe the exception of Stu Ungar) associated with successful characters in the game.

Schleger – who has more than $4m in online tournament earnings to his name - interestingly points out that though he smoked more crack in 2013 than ever before, it was also the best year of his life; he got married and enjoyed a lot of success playing poker.

However, it is perhaps a correlation of this nature that prevents him from a full recovery; if he’s managed to blend the habit into the background of a successful life thus far, he’ll unlikely be motivated enough to stop, something that Schleger admits himself in his post:

“I expect to smoke a lot less crack in 2014 than I did last year, but I’d be setting myself up for failure if I made an abstinence goal.”

So far in 2014, Schleger has decided to call time on his poker career, allowing him to re-build his life back in the US with his family and focus on his passion for writing. He also indicates that he’s beginning to make strides toward kicking the habit for good, talking about using his passion for sport – a natural high – to override any recurring urges to smoke again – though that will obviously prove a lot easier said than done.

We wish him the best of luck with his challenging year ahead and hopefully, road to recovery.
