The King of Clay vs. the Queen of the Felt

The pressure will be on Selbst to win for the pros

According to a recent article from tennisnow.com, the world’s top ranked tennis player and PokerStars sporting ambassador, Rafael Nadal, will take on the world’s most successful female poker player, Vanessa Selbst, in a heads up poker duel in Monte Carlo this coming Friday (April 11th).

Despite Nadal’s thirst for competition and incredible talent as a sportsman, Selbst is also an elite competitor at the top of her game, and with almost $10m worth of tournament earnings to her name, she will undoubtedly be pegged as a massive favourite by those who follow the game – but it’s never easy in poker, especially when you’re expected to win.

Nadal has already demonstrated some admirable poker prowess by defeating a celebrity line up – that included Daniel Negreanu and retired soccer stars Andriy Shevchenko and Ronaldo – in a PokerStars sponsored charity event at EPT Prague late last year.

He also took on his home nation Spain in a micro stakes Zoom poker challenge and managed to defy the odds and come out on top – again winning for charity. Like a true champion, every time Nadal has been called out to the felt, he has delivered.

“It’s no secret that I love the competition and that’s what I like about poker,” Nadal said. “It’s a game of skill that requires mental strength and the ability to out-think your opponents, and in that way there are similarities to tennis. I have been playing poker online for almost two years and now I’m looking forward to the challenge of playing against Vanessa.”

It will be very interesting indeed to find out who comes out on top and we will bring you more on the story as it unfolds.
