Jason Mercier and Sorel Mizzi both score second SCOOP titles

Mercier the early pace setter in the prestigious SCOOP Player of the Year race

The festival may only be a few days old, but two huge names of tournament poker have already pounced to claim Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) titles in the festival’s 2015 edition.

First, Team PokerStars pro Jason Mercier earned a second career SCOOP victory and $39,200 for topping an elite field of 56 players in the High version of Event #5 last night, a $2,100 Fixed Limit Badugi tournament.

Then just an hour or so later, Sorel ‘zangbezan24’ Mizzi netted his own second career SCOOP title and $364,960 – his largest online score to date - by taking down the massive $2,100 buy-in High version of Event #3, a 2-day No Limit Hold’em tournament which attracted some 986 players.

Amazingly he actually finished as runner up in last year’s version of the same SCOOP event. Not quite on Mark Newhouse levels of astonishing back-to-back runs, but pretty darn impressive none the less:

Although Mizzi has won far more prize money thus far, it’s actually Mercier who is looking in better shape where the overall SCOOP Player of the Series leaderboard is concerned.

Mizzi currently sits on 100 points, meaning he hasn’t cashed an event than the one he actually took down, while Mercier is joint top of the table with Belarusian player ‘Leqenden’, boasting 135 points already.

The eventual winner of the overall leaderboard competition bags $10,000 in cash, a PCA Main Event package worth $16,500 and an SCOOP POY trophy. There are also $5,000 cash prizes and $5,200 WCOOP Main Event tickets up for grabs for champions of the individual Low, Meidum and High tournament leaderboards.
