In the same week it signed British Olympic snowboarder Zoe Gillings-Brier to its Team SportsStar roster, PokerStars has now bid farewell to Spanish tennis legend Rafael Nadal, who’s contracted was 3 years after he signed back in July 2012.

During his time as an ambassador for the game via the world’s largest poker site, Nadal took on his home nation Spain in a successful heads-up micro stakes Zoom challenge on PokerStars.es, beat the likes of Daniel Negreanu, Andriy Shevchenko and Ronaldo in a single table charity tournament at the 2013 EPT Prague festival, battled Vanessa Selbst heads-up in Monte Carlo, and defeated the aforementioned Brazilian Ronaldo in a special charity duel which saw the World Cup winner have to wash the dishes as a forfeit.

He emerged victorious in all of the above, other than his battle with Selbst, demonstrating his champion’s mind set can be applicable to all competitive arenas.

As of yet there’s been no official word from the Nadal camp, but after speculation had been growing around the community due to the Spaniard’s noticeable absent from the Team PokerStars SportStar web page, PokerStars have now confirmed his departure:

"Rafa has played an important role for our brand and while his time as a member of Team PokerStars SportStars has concluded for now, we remain close to him and his team”, said a representative from the site.

"Our strategy and work with Rafa has led our strategy to evolve, and consequently, our current focus in on working with Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar Jr.”
