Eugene Katchalov cuts sponsorship ties with PokerStars

Ukrainian born tournament powerhouse Eugene Katchalov announced this week that he is the latest pro to be relieved from duty by PokerStars. Katchalov enjoyed over five years as a part of the prestigious Team Pro roster after signing for the online giants back in March of 2011.

Katchalov, who is currently taking part in the Global Poker League (GPL) as a member of Maria Ho’s LA Sunset squad (of which Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul is also a member), boasts just shy of $9 million in live tournament earnings and is Ukraine’s most successful ever player in that format of the game.

Some of his live career highlights include taking down a monstrous $2.4 million top prize in what was a huge World Poker Tour (WPT) Doyle Brunson Classic back in 2007, and a $1.5 million score for winning the $100K buy-in Super High Roller event at the 2011 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA).

Since Amaya took over the PokerStars reigns there has been a mass exodus of pros from the site’s roster, with the likes of Joe Cada, Jonathan Duhamel, Humberto Brenes, Marcel Luske, Dario Minieri, David Williams and Ivan Demidov all losing their deals. In addition, Victoria Coren-Mitchell, Ike Haxton and Alex Millar have all opted to leave the team on their own accord over their disagreement with either the introduction of casino games or the termination of Supernova Elite status.

With the acquisition of new players in mind, PokerStars has since been more focused on using sponsorships to grow its presence in developing areas of the poker world such as India and Japan - which prompted the recruitment of both Aditya Agarwal and Kosei Ichinose

Streaming platform Twitch is also viewed as an invaluable resource where generating new custom is concerned, which has pushed the industry leaders to hire prolific broadcasters Jason Somerville, Jaime Staples and most recently Kevin Martin.
