PokerStars and Aussie Millions Part Ways

The Aussie Millions, one of the longest standing international poker festivals is to once again fly solo next year after a long affiliation and sponsorship deal with PokerStars.

The move is likely to be part of PokerStars recent re-branding of their international live tournament offerings which includes the dissolution of the European Poker Tour (EPT) after the current season, as well as the merging of other popular live tour circuits (LAPT, APPT, EUREKA etc). As previously reported, the new two-tiered structure will see events/tours branded as either PokerStars Championship Events (larger events) or PokerStars Festivals. The Aussie Millions pre-dates PokerStars (the antipodean poker festival has been running at the Crown Melbourne since 1998) and is very much known in its own right, and it's believed that as PokerStars live events are designed to promote the PokerStars name above all else, that the Aussie Millions doesn't really fit into that remit.

The Aussie Millions and the Crown Melbourne have been the premier offering of Stars APPT tour for several years, but after the 2016 Asia-Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) Melbourne, which starts on 6th October, the partnership will officially be over.

The news was announced by Joel Williams the Crown Poker Tournament Director who said:

“Crown Melbourne can confirm that the 2016 Asia-Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) Melbourne, set to take place on Thursday 6 October 2016, will be the final APPT event to be held in Melbourne.

Crown Melbourne can also confirm that the 2017 Aussie Millions Poker Championship, set to take place from Wednesday 11 January to Monday 30 January 2017 will revert to a stand-alone event.

On behalf of Crown Management and the Poker Team, we would like to extend our sincerest thanks to everyone from APPT including the management and operations teams, along with the poker community for their ongoing support.

All previous Satellites entry pathways are expected to remain active for the 2017 Aussie Millions. Land based satellites have already commenced in the Crown Poker Room.”

2017's Aussie Millions starts January 11th and will run for the rest of the month.
