Vanessa Kade Wins $1.5Million 1st Place Prize in The PokerStars Sunday Million Anniversary Edition

Vanessa Kades whirlwind tour of the headlines in recent weeks just got a whole lot bigger, the Canadian pro taking down the 15th Anniversary edition of PokerStars Sunday Million for a $1,514,920 score.

The massive win was greeted with delight by her fans, friends and followers on Twitter, with many referencing the highly-public ‘misogynist’ row with Dan Bilzerian and GGPoker that has dominated poker headlines in 2021…

We’ll explain that series of rather ridiculous events a little later, but first up, Kade’s dramatic win itself deserves the spotlight.

The Win

The 15th Anniversary of the Sunday Million saw the second-biggest prizepool in its 15-year history, a monster $13,975,200 after almost 70,000 entries appeared.

By yesterday, that number had been whittled down to just 65, and by the time they reached the final table, Kade – playing under her PokerStars nickname ‘Niffller’ – was in 7th spot, with all her own action.

The chip lead exchanged hands several times, but when a deal was rejected 4-handed, it was time for Kade to dominate, taking out her remaining three opponents.

Heads-up against long-time leader “Talibenes” lasted just two hands, by this time Kade with the bigger stack and looking of her pocket pair to hold up for a historic win…

Final Table Results

1 Vanessa "Niffller" Kade $1,514,920
2 Talibenes $1,035,358
3 PanchoVetin $707,640
4 Transylvanian $483,652
5 peu3ep $330,564
6 malinga $225,930
7 ikkedus $154,416
8 kefirchik106 $105,538
9 Vvlankov $72,132

The Controversy

Although Kade was already fairly well-known within the poker community, it was Dan Bilzerian who thrust her into the headlines, the newly-signed GGPoker ambassador unhappy about being called out for his serial misogyny and violence against women.

Rather than fixing their mess by getting rid of the self-styled ‘Instagram King’, GGPoker doubled down on their decision, adding to the controversy by terminating Kade’s residual affiliate account

The Sponsorship

If all publicity is good publicity, it worked against GG and for Kade, as ACR stepped into the breach to offer Kade a sponsorship, although it had been under discussion for almost a year before both sides took the plunge.

Her bio for the US-facing online poker-room reads: “Vanessa is a strong advocate for women. She’s not afraid to hold players accountable for the sort of misogyny and bullying that undermines the spirit of the game. Although poker is largely dominated by men, with powerful voices like Vanessa’s, the game is changing for the better.”

That support for Vanessa Kade paid off quickly, and her massive scoop of the Sunday Million – the biggest payday ever for a winner in its 15 years – has shown quite clearly that Bilzerian and GGPoker’s misogyny and idiocy has backfired quite spectacularly.

And on hand to congratulate his new team mate at ACR was none other than the consummate professional ambassador, Chris Moneymaker
