WSOP 2017: Big Names Still Alive as 85 Survive to Day 6 of the Main Event

With just 85 players left from the 7,221 starters at this year's $10,000 WSOP Main Event there are still plenty of well known names left in the field, including a couple of last year's November Niner's who are looking to follow in the footsteps of Mark Newhouse, the only player since the poker boom to make back-to-back final tables, which he did in 2013 and 2014.

Currently leading the way with 9,9m chips is little known German Robin Hegele who, prior to this event, only had $48k in live tournament winnings on his resume. Just behind Hegele in 2nd lies Joshua Horton, another unknown with just one recorded live tourney cash to his name, an impressive opening score of over $146k from a recent WSOPC event.

The first big name on the lis is UK pro Max Silver in 3rd place with 8.665m. It's been a good series for Silver who won his first bracelet in the $3k NLHE last month for $172,645. This is Silver's second deep run in the Main Event in consecutive years as he finished 33rd last year for a $216,211 payday.

Other big names still in contention include, Antoine Saute, Benjamin Pollak, former WSOP POY and November Niner Ben Lamb. Last year's November Niner's Michael Ruane and Kenny Hallaert are also still in the mix with 4.37m and 3m repsectively.

Also still in are Bryan Piccioli (5.4m) Conor Drinan, (3.36m) Christian Pham, (2.8m), Dario Sammartino (2.585), Marcel Luske (2.29m), and 3 time WSOP bracelet winner Ian Johns (1.1m)

Big names who fell by the wayside on Day 5 included; Vitaly Lunkin, Jake Balsiger, JP Kelly, Ankush Mandavia, Ike Haxton, Kathy Liebert, Chino Rheem, and David Pham. Charlie Carrel, was unlucky to fall at the end of the day in a 5.2m pot when he ran Kings into Alexander Greenblatt's Aces. Had he won, Carrel would have been among the top 30 chip stacks going into Day 6.

Day 6 starts today at 11am local time.
