A Rare Live Tourney Outing for Isildur1 at PokerStars National Champs in Barcelona

Considering his undoubted tournament abilities (with 3 SCOOP's including a Main Event win, and a $1.25m win at 2012's PCA on his impressive yet brief tournament resume), Viktor "Isildur1" Blom is rarely spotted at live tournaments, choosing instead to grind high stakes online. However, the enigmatic Swede has decided to grace the PokerStars National Championship in Barcelona with his presence this year.

Blom has been notable by his absence from the yearly tourney-fest at the WSOP in Las Vegas ever since his one and only appearance in 2012. However, that single appearance pretty much changed the face of high stakes online poker as it was Blom's introduction to games other than Hold'em and Omaha when he entered the $50,000 Poker Players Championship despite not knowing how to play many of the games!

According to Blom's then PokerStars stablemate, Daniel Negreanu, he tutored the Swedish superstar "for about half an hour" on the other games, before Blom amazingly went on to take the chip lead after Day 3 of the event. Although he didn't manage to hang on to his lead, Blom did cash for over $100k for his eventual 14th place finish. Soon after returning from Vegas, Isildur1 was back at PokerStars and jumping straight into the highest stakes 2-7 Triple Draw and FLO8 games running - and he's been there or thereabouts ever since!

Blom hasn't attended a live tournament outside of Europe since, and he's attended very few of those, so it's something of a surprise to see him at a €1,100 tourney, especially in summer, when he traditionally likes to spend as much time as possible back home in Sweden.

Perhaps its the €4,000,000 guaranteed prizepool which has attracted him? Maybe the culture, climate, and the nightlife? Whatever the reason, it became clear from all the attention that the appearance of the legendary "Isildur1" was the highlight of Day 1a. Other big name pros in attendance on Day 1a includedthe likes of Team PokerStars Pro Online Jaime Staples, 2-time WSOP bracelet winner Vitaly Lunkin, former Novemeber Niner Bruno Politano, and former EPT Main Event winners; Anton Wigg, Dominik Panka, Jan Bendik, Jasper Meijer van Putten, and Jean Montury. However, none of these seasoned pros garnered a fraction of the attention that Viktor Blom attracted.

The PokerStars National Championship Barcelona (formerly the Estrellas Poker Tour Main Event) has grown in popularity over the years, increasing in size from 1,037 entries in 2012 (with a €1,000,000 prizepool) to 3,447 entries and a €3,343,590 prize pool last year. Day 1a got off to a good start with over 800 players registering - and with four starting flights and a €4m guarantee, there's every chance this event will be bigger than ever.

Once the National Championship is out of the way there will be plenty more action for Blom to sink his teeth into if he chooses to stick around including the €7,000,000 GTD €5,300 PokerStars Championship Barcelona Main Event,  €10,300 PLO & NLHE High Rollers, a €25k No Limit Single Day event, and the €50k Super High Roller.

Let's hope he sticks around!
