Steffen Sontheimer Wins Poker Masters $100k Finale & Purple Jacket

Germany's Steffen Sontheimer completed his masterful display at the inaugural Poker Master Series at the Las Vegas Aria last night in the most fitting fashion, by winning the $100,000 entry finale for $1,512,000 as well as the purple jacket awarded to the player with the most winnings throughout the series.

Sonthemier went into the fifth and final event having already won one of the four $50,000 entry tournaments as well as final tabling another two (where he finished in 4th and 5th place respectively) and finishing on the bubble in the other.

The long night began with another German phenom, Fedor Holz, with a slight chip lead over countrymen Christian Christner, Sontheimer, and Stefan Schillhabel, with the USA's Justin Bonomo and Seth Davies completing the final table of six.

It was a cagey start to the final table with the chip lead changing hands several times and players going from short-stacks to 7-figure stacks and back down again for the first few hours. In fact it took over five hours before the first player left the table, and in the end it was Schillhabel who was sent to the rail in sixth. His stack had gradually diminished and he got his last 315k in holding {a-Clubs}{3-Clubs} after shoving over the top of Justin Bonomo's raise from under the gun. Bonomo called with {k-Hearts}{q-Diamonds} and was lucky to hit the {K-Clubs} on the river to take him over 1m chips and send Schillhabel out for a $180,000 payday.

Despite boosting his stack, Bonomo was the next to fall after he became involved in most of the next half dozen pots or so with little success. He busted on the 122nd hand of the final table when he jammed his last 365k from the hi-jack with {k-Diamonds}{10-Spades} only to find himself dominated both ways when Sontheimer called from the cutoff with {a-Spades}{10-Spades} and Christner then called from the big blind with {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades}. A board of low cards improved nobody and Christner took the pot as Bonomo took his leave. He won $216,00 for his fifth place finish.

On the very next hand the last remaining American player was eliminated as Seth Davies pushed his last 535k with {A-Clubs}{7-Spades} and was looking good for a double-up after Christner called with {K-Hearts}{7-Hearts}. The {5-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} flop, however, left Davies drawing thin. The {4-Hearts} turn and {6-Hearts} river only improved Christner to a flush and Davies was gone in 4th, good for $324,000.

After such a dry period at the start of the final table the bust-outs were coming thick and fast as just three hands later Fedor Holz bade the table goodbye when he pushed his last 645k in the middle from the small blind with {q-Hearts}{j-Diamonds} after Sontheimer had raised to 90k from the button. Christner woke up in the big blind with {7-Hearts}{7-Clubs} and pushed all-in. Sontheimer got out of the way and Holz and Christner were off to the races. A {a-Spades}{10-Clubs}{2-Spades}{8-Clubs}{5-Diamonds} board was of no use to Fedor and he left in 3rd place, cashing for $504,000 - his second half million dollar score this week.

Sontheimer started heads-up play with a 4.9m to 2.3m chip lead and after 18 hands Sontheimer had taken a huge 17:1 chip lead, up 6.8m to 400k. However, a series of timely double-ups brought Christner back over his heads-up starting stack as he played 2.4m to Sontheimer's 4.8m.

Just five hands later, however, and it was all over when Christner pushed all in for 1.89m with {2-Diamonds}{2-Clubs} and Sontheimer snapped him off with {q-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}. The miracle two never arrived and Steffen Sontheimer capped a magnificent week by winning the $100k finale for $1,512,000. Christner earned $864,000 for his second place finish.

The battle for the purple jacket turned into a one-man race with Sontheimer cashing for an incredible $2,733,000, with his nearest rival, Bryn Kenney, cashing for a combined $1,085,000.
