Las Vegas in Lockdown After Worst Mass Shooting in US History

Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas - where 64 year old Stephen Paddock unleashed America's worst ever mass shooting last night

Las Vegas, the poker players Mecca is in lockdown today after witnessing what is being described as the worst mass shooting in US history late last night.

A gunman, now identified as 64 year old Nevada resident Stephen Paddock, opened fire on the 22,000 strong crowd in attendance at the Route 91 Harvest Festival from the 32nd floor of the nearby Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino. According to the latest reports at least 58 people are dead with another two hundred injured.

By the time police forcibly entered Paddock's room using explosives the gunman had taken his own life. Inside the room police found nine guns from which Paddock had been able to fire off hundreds of shots, causing devastation on an unprecendented scale.

Naturally the whole of America, and indeed the rest of the world have reacted with shock, horror, and overwhelming concern for those involved or close to the horrendous scenes. Some of those closest to the incident were of course professional poker players, many of whom call Las Vegas home, and as such floods of messages of support, concern, and disbelief from the poker community have poured in throughout the morning.

In one haunting instagram clip high rolling poker player Dan Bilzerian filmed himself running from the concert after allegedly witnessing a girl next to him getting shot in the head. Whilst fleeing Bilzerian comments over the sound of automatic gunfire, "Holy f**k, this girl just got shot in the f***in head, this is so f***in crazy" In a later post Bilzerian said he was intent on returning to the scene with a gun before thankfully changing his mind and urging people to stay away from the strip.

Paddock's motivation for perpatrating such a heinous act are as yet unknown, although there will doubtless be plenty of speculation until a full investigation is able to draw any firm conclusions.

Stephen's borother Eric Paddock of Orlando, Florida, said he had "no idea" why his 64-year-old brother committed the shooting, and that his brother was "just a guy" who went to the hotels, gambled, and went to shows adding, "I don't know how he could stoop to this low point, hurting someone else,". It has been reported that Paddock had made several large gambling transactions in the "tens of thousands" in recent weeks, although whether or not these transactions were wins or losses is not known.

Already ISIS have claimed responsibility, saying that Paddock “converted to Islam several months ago”, and that “The Las Vegas attacker is a soldier of the Islamic State in response to calls to target coalition countries,”. However, no evidence of Paddock's "conversion" or religious background has been provided and it's likely that ISIS are simply using Paddock's attack as a platform to further push their agenda.

Las Vegas police also apprehended Paddock's 62 year old roomate Marilou Danley, as a "person of interest". After she was located overseas, police said the 62-year-old - who is believed to have lived with Paddock - was not involved in the shooting.

On the 274th day of the year this was the 273rd mass shooting in the USA in 2017.
