WSOPE Gets Underway At King's Casino Rozvadov

This year's WSOPE got underway this afteroon at Leon Tsourkernik's King's Casino in Rozvadov, Czech Republic with event #1 €1,100 NLHE Monster Stack.

The current leader of this year's WSOP Player of the Year race, Chris Ferguson, was among those to register for the first of the eleven scheduled events which also include the €10k Main Event which this year has a €5m guaranteed prize pool, and the €111,111 buy-in High Roller for One Drop which holds a €10m guarantee. As the leader in the POY race after the Las Vegas events, Ferguson will get a free entry into the WSOPE Main Event which starts on November 4th.

One of the main rivals to Ferguson for the POY title, John Racener, has also joined the fray for event one. Racener, who finished 2nd in 2010's Main Event and who won his first WSOP bracelet over the summer in the $10k Dealer's Choice event and is currently 3rd in the POY race, has come to the WSOPE straight from his honeymoon in Greece and would dearly love to give himself an extra wedding present by winning the POY trophy telling reporters, “This [winning the WSOP POY] has always been a goal of mine and I really want to get that banner on the wall of the Rio that says Player of the Year with my name on it."

Above: Both Chris Ferguson and John Racener have already joined the day 1 action at the WSOPE as they chase the Player of the Year title.

However, one of Ferguson's other main rivals for POY, John Monette (currently 4th), will not be attending the European leg of the series. Monette, who is far more comfortable in games other the Hold'em (he has won bracelets in 2-7, Stud, and 8-Game)  has told Pokernews that the NLHE bias (8 of the 11 events are NLHE) is one of the reasons he has decided against travelling to Europe, saying "I want to go, but I feel like they are making it difficult. The casino is in the middle of nowhere and there is absolutely nothing to do after you bust. The POY is usually a well-rounded player that can play every game, but the WSOPE is almost all hold'em."

Fifth placed Ray Henson has also declined the opportunity to fight for POY but is vocal about his desire to see somebody other than former Full Tilt co-owner Ferguson win it, saying, "I have a lot of friends toward the top of that list that I would love to see beat Ferguson."
