Doyle Brunson Makes It Through Day 2 of $10K No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw Championship After Retirement Announcement

The second day of a WSOP tournament is rarely momentous, players jockeying for position and trying mainly to last the day out with some chips and advance up the money ladder in many cases, even in a $10k bracelet event, but the No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Championship was a little different, Doyle Brunson announcing it will probably be his final tournament of an illustrious career…

It wouldn’t be his final ever day of play in a big tournament, however, the Texan legend making it to the final eleven returning today to battle for the bracelet, his son Todd also still in the tournament.

Day two had already seen some of his rivals for GOAT fall by the wayside, 10-time bracelet winner Phil Ivey and 14-time WSOP champion Phil Helmuth both crashing out of the 95-entry field which produced an $893,000 prizepool to go with the gold bracelet, Hellmuth too busy counting cashes in other events to keep his eye on the game at hand perhaps…

Brunson’s retirement announcement overshadowed the day’s play somewhat, the 84-year old explaining before taking his seat: I’m planning on retiring after the summer. My wife is not in very good health, and I will stay with her for the duration of either her life or mine.”

The 10-time bracelet winner whose card-playing career spans 6-decades said of his patchy WSOP tournament history: “The tournaments were just a means to get players to come out to Las Vegas. I never cared for them much. Looking back, I kind of wish that I had, because I could have won a lot more of them.”
