Phil Galfond's Open Letter To Thank Daniel Negreanu!

Phil Galfond is 33 now. He has three WSOP bracelets (all in $10k events), $2.9 million in tournament cashes, and far more than that online winnings. He is a founder of RunItOnce, a coaching site that is currently branching out into producing its own poker software.

In other words: he’s a recognisable pro and a major part of the poker establishment.

But that wasn’t always the case. A touching emotional outburst on Twitter from Daniel Negreanu – in which he gave some love to four players he sees as “people poker is lucky to have” – hit home with Galfond.

Unlike most of the people who responded by simply suggesting more names who should have been on Negreanu’s list, Galfond responded with a touching tribute to Negreanu. It came in essay form, with Galfond circumventing the character limit of Twitter by posting his eulogy as a picture.

In it he describes the first time he had played poker with Daniel, and very sweetly points out that Daniel Negreanu made Galfond’s own first $10k experience enjoyable by treating him like a peer. Expanding on that, he points out that Negreanu’s friendly and talkative approach to the game has done much for the game “one day, one table and one player at a time.”

The other players mentioned by Daniel were Nick Schulman, Maria Ho and Jason Somerville. They have yet to respond, but they’ll need to take their time if they want to put out something as charmingly fanboy-ish as Galfond.
