Aria Renames ‘Ivey Room’ To ‘Table 1’

Stan McCormack, Arias Director of Poker Operations and owner of one of the best handles in Poker Twitter, announced that the casino renamed its world famous high stakes poker room. Ivey Room (named after poker pro Phil Ivey) is now known as Table 1.

McCormack took to his @ThePokerBoss Twitter account to announce the decision, crediting Elayne Teitelbaum, Aria’s poker room host, for the name idea. The announcement was promptly retweeted by the official Aria Poker Twitter account.

The high stakes Aria poker room was renamed to “Ivey Room” in 2010 in an effort to compete with Bellagio’s Bobby’s Room, where the Vegas high stakes regulars usually play a cash game dubbed as the “Big Game” in poker folklore.

When Aria opened its poker room, they did so with much fanfare, with a $1 Million Invitation-only freeroll, and a chance to play in a $250,000 heads-up match against Phil Ivey himself.

After the opening, however, Ivey rarely played in Vegas, preferring to spend his days perfecting Short-Deck Poker with fellow poker pro Tom Dwan at the Macau high stakes games.

The “Big Game” never fully moved to the Ivey Room like Aria hoped, however, the room still carried plenty of prestige in the Vegas poker scene. Many low-to-mid stakes players have pulled a Mike McDermott by taking a stab at the high stakes game.

While the announcement gives a reason for the abrupt name change, it remains to be seen if this was the only reason.

Bobby’s Room was named after Bellagio owner Bobby Baldwin, but Ivey never officially worked for Aria and had no known stake in the company’s success.

It’s unknown exactly how much Aria paid Phil Ivey for lending his name to the casino over the years, and one has to wonder how much of a return they saw, as Ivey himself stopped playing in the room and barely mentioned it in his rare public appearances.

The notoriously media-shy Phil Ivey has yet to publicly comment on the name change.
