Justin Bonomo Takes Down Triton SHR Short Deck for $586,000

The Triton Jeju Super High Roller Series got off to a blistering start, with Justin Bonomo taking down the HKD250k (US$32,000) buy-in Short Deck Ante-only tournament, a victory worth HK$4.6 million (US$586,000).

The Triton Series has attracted most of the world’s biggest and best players over the past couple of years, and the 2019 version saw the likes of Isaac ‘Ike’ Haxton, Canadian brothers Sam and Luc Greenwood, England’s leading money-winner Stephen Chidwick, and Jason Koon take seats in the Short Deck opener.

Triton founders Richard Yong and Paul Phua were also in the hunt for the big money, while Phil Ivey, Tom ‘durrrr’ Dwan, Daniel ‘Jungleman’ Cates, Bryn Kenney, Mikita Badziakouski, Dominik Nitsche, Steve O’Dwyer, David Peters, Erik Seidel and Dan Smith are all ‘confirmed as en route’ to the 8-day SHR fest in South Korea’s Landing Casino.

“Every name is a big name,” said Luca Vivaldi, Triton’s TD, ahead of the first of three Short Deck events, the other six tournaments featuring the traditional 52-cards.

The popularity of Short Deck poker has skyrocketed over the last 12 months or so, with Triton front and centre with the 36-card version of No Limit Hold’em, all the cards from five down removed from the deck.

With 37 unique entries, and 28 re-entries, Justin Bonomo was among the less-experienced short-deck aficionados, but the number 1 in the all-time money-winners list outlasted his peers to take the title.

“I’m super happy to have won this obviously,” Bonomo said afterwards. “A lot of people at the table had a lot of experience of short deck. For me, a lot of the spots were new and I had to figure them out as I went along. Some decisions I just ended up guessing.”

Justin added: “It’s a lot of fun learning. I really like the dynamic puzzle aspect, just solving things on the fly. It’s stressful though. People are watching on the stream at home. My friends are watching. I just don’t want to make a huge mistake.”
