Malaysia’s Michael Soyza Takes Down Triton High Roller Title for $1.421million

The Triton High Roller series was back to full deck for event 3 on the schedule after two days of 36-card poker, and it was Malaysias Michael Soyza who lifted the HK$500k ($63,700) buy-in tournament for a HK$11.15 million (US$1.421 million) payday, despite sporting a nasty snowboarding injury!

Just two weeks ago the young Malaysian sensation had to have a titanium plate and 10 screws inserted in his hand, but it didn’t prevent him from showing his poker prowess against the best in the world.

“Feels pretty good, it’s nice to win something,” Soyza said afterwards, adding: “You just play your hands and hopefully it works out well. Win flips, you know. That’s how you do it.”

The Triton High Roller Series is not for the fainthearted, Justin Bonomo, Bryn Kenney, Jason Koon, San Greenwood and a host of greater or lesser-known Asian high-rollers all out to chase the big titles and huge money on offer at the Shinhwa World Resort’s Landing Casino.

A total of 49 unique entries and 32 re-entries produced a HK$38.07 million prizepool and the 23 who made day two were soon whittle down to the final table of six, China’s Xu Liang bubbling it when his AK couldn’t overcome Soyza’s queens, but still quadrupling his buy-in for a healthy $241,800 payout.

Jason Koon was next to hit the rails, the Triton Poker ambassador producing yet another deep run, and when Soyza’s Malaysian compatriots busted either side of Bryn Kenney’s last stand, it was Sam Greenwood who stood between Soyza and the title…

As Lex Veldhuis stated in the commentary booth for the excellent Triton Poker livestream, “It’s an eight or nothing,” and Soyza found the winning hero call.

“Thankfully it was short,” said Soyza of his heads-up battle with Greenwood. “Sam’s a good player so I’m just lucky I had a good spot. I decided to take it and it worked out pretty well.”
