Manig Loeser Wins EPT Monte Carlo Main Event for €603,777

It was late into the night at the Monte Carlo Casino when Manig Loeser finally held aloft the PokerStars EPT Main Event trophy and winners cheque for €603,777 – a three-way deal seeing Wei Huang and Viktor Katzenberger also securing €½ million+ paydays…

A total of 922 entries had started out on the five–day journey to the final table, a share of the €4,471,700 prizefund uppermost in their minds, a mix of pros, regs and recs forking out the €5200 buy-in for the dream of lifting the flagship EPT Monte Carlo Main Event.

By the close of play yesterday, only six remained – among them two huge names in the game, German super highroller beast Manig Loeser and former WSOP Main Event champ Ryan Riess, with four relative unknowns looking to upset the form book.

It was Loeser who would strike first, a one-two combination sending Portugal’s Luis Medina and Italy’s Nicola Grieco to the rails, huge and well-earned payouts for their deep runs.

Riess would fall next, China’s Wei Huang hitting a runner-runner straight to fell the American and continue his amazing run on his first visit to Europe, the amateur poker player a finance controller for PepsiCo back in Shanghai.

Now three-handed, an incredible hour-long deal discussion ensued, at the end of which the following numbers were agreed:

Wei Huang €552,056
Viktor Katzenberger €529,707
Manig Loeser €525,716

For Katzenberger the payday would be 6-times his career earnings in the game, but the trophy and additional €78,061 that remained to be played for would not be going back to Hungary with him. Losing a huge flip to Loeser and finding himself dominated on the very next hand by Wei, Katzenberger bowed out in a very impressive 3rd place.

Loeser and Wei traded blows for quite some time, before the German was suddenly faced with an all-in re-raise just as he had turned a straight. Insta-calling, he found Wei was drawing dead to one of the remaining queens, but the ace of diamonds fell and it was all over.

Final results

1 Manig Loeser €603,777
2 Wei Huang €552,056
3 Viktor Katzenberger €529,707
4 Ryan Riess €265,620
5 Nicola Grieco €206,590
6 Luis Medina €152,800
