Brett Apter Scoops WSOP Glory in $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em Shootout

Brett Apter became the WSOP Shootout king last night, lifting the $1500 buy-in NLHE title and $238,824 as he saw off some of the best players in the world to take his first WSOP gold bracelet…

The Arlington, Virginia man’s victory launched him past the $1million career tournament earnings milestone, but it was far from an easy run – 916 other players entering the popular event.

The shootout format sees one player advance to the next round by being the last player left at his or her table. The starting field was reduced to 100 on Day 1, then down to 10 on the second day, with the final table played out yesterday evening.

A round 2 heads-up win against Erik Seidel boosted his confidence and he explained afterwards to WSOP reporters: “Ever since I won yesterday, and knew I was going to the final table, it hasn’t felt real”.

That final table would see one massive hand turning his title hopes around, a three-way all-in that saw Apter table aces against the ace-king holdings of both Anatolii Zyrin and Shintaro Baba.

Apter explained: “It started off really tough. I didn’t win a hand for five hours I believe, so I was short for the first 2/3 of the day, and then I got aces against ace-king and ace-king and everything just went from there. I started just climbing up.”

That climb would result in a heads-up battle with Zyrin, and again it was pocket rockets that would spell doom and gloom for his Russian opponent, who had at one point held a 4:1 chip lead.

Zyrin couldn’t improve his top pair from the flop and Apter was off to his rail in celebration, telling reporters later: "I was just soaking up every moment with all my friends here, playing heads up for a bracelet”.
