Paul Newey Celebrates 50th Birthday With £156,400 BPO Win

English highstakes amateur Paul Newey landed himself a British Poker Open title on the eve of his 50th birthday, taking down the second £10k event of the series for a £156,400 payday…

The multi-millionaire who made his fortune by building up and selling the Ocean Finance loan company in the mid-noughties was the only non-fulltime pro at the final table today, facing off with the likes of Sam Greenwood, Elio Fox and Mikita Badziakouski.

Newey - known online as topdoll827 - is no stranger to the big-money tournament scene, however, with over $5million in cashes prior to his win today, although he had never previously managed a big live tournament victory.

The 46 entrants meant there was a £460,000 prizepool, with seven paid spots – that 7th place going to England’s biggest-ever tournament casher, Stephen Chidwick, bubbling the official final table last night.

Coming into today’s action, Sam Soverel led the chip counts, Newey and Badziakouski bringing up the rear, but that changed in the first few hands, Cary Katz sharing out his entire stack to the shortstacks as he fell in 6th.

Newey chipped up further when he downed Sam Greenwood in 5th, and then grabbed Badziakouski’s stack when his AQ dominated the Belarussian’s AJ.

When Soverel ended Elio Fox’s title dreams in 3rd place, it was Newey waiting for him heads-up, and it didn’t take long for a big hand and a bit of a bad beat to separate the US highstakes pro from the trophy…

Newey: 9♠ 9♥
Soverel: J♠ J♣
Board: Q♦ 2♥ 8♥ 9♣ Kx

That brutal turn card left Soverel with a single big blind, and although he managed to double once, the end was nigh, Newey closing out the win soon afterwards.

Final results

1 Paul Newey £156,400
2 Sam Soverel £101,200
3 Elio Fox £69,000
4 Mikita Badziakouski £46,000
5 Sam Greenwood £36,800
6 Cary Katz £27,600
7 Stephen Chidwick £23,000
