Sam Soverel Wins £25k BPO Title For £322,000

Sam Soverel finally delivered on his threatened win at the British Poker Open in London this weekend, scooping the first £25k NLHE event of the series for a £322,000 payday.

The young Florida pro had already taken two runner-up spots this week as he sat down as one of 28 entries in the $25k tournament, a prizepool of £700,000 and many of the world’s leading highstakes players involved.

The field had been reduced to just five by the beginning of day two and the final table, and it is was Vicent Bosca who would depart first, the Spanish pro bubbling the four paid places.

That left Soverel, the overnight chip leader and Bosca’s vanquisher, facing a trio of modern-day beasts – Stephen Chidwick, Ali Imsirovic and Rainer Kempe.

The Englishman couldn’t improve on 4th, falling to Kempe, and then the Imsirovic hit the rail in 3rd courtesy of Soverel, the latter flopping a wheel against top pair.

Heads-up was evenly-matched, but two huge hands pushed the title Soverel’s way, pocket queens doing serious damage…

Soverel: Q♥ Q♣
Kempe: J♦ 9♥
Board: K♣ 2♣ 8♦ 8♥ 7♦

…and on the very next hand Kempe’s J♣ 10♥ was dominated by Q♦ 10♣, the board of no help and the title going Soverel’s way.

A delighted Soverel said afterwards, “I like pretty much everyone here and they’re fun to play with. It’s a lot of really tough competition, a bit tougher than I had hoped for, but it’s fun to play with really good players – you learn a lot.”

Final Results:

1 Sam Soverel £322,000
2 Rainer Kempe £196,000
3 Ali Imsirovic £112,000
4 Stephen Chidwick £70,000

Soverel’s victory and two second place finishes puts him way out in front in the leaderboard race, although with £50k, £100k and the Super High Roller £100k still to come that could easily change.
