Dan Smith has won his first Triton title after taking down the Monte Carlo Invitational at the iconic casino in the millionaires paradise of Monaco.

The latest Triton Super High Roller Series is now well underway on the Riviera after starting with this unique style of tournament to get the action kicked off.

Unique Tournament Format

The Monte Carlo Invitational is built around high net worth individuals inviting a professional to team up with them.

They play the first eight levels by themselves and then converge their stacks and play together for the remainder of the event.

Danish businessman Theis Vad Hennebjerre gave Smith his invite for the $210,000 buy-in event which would see 58 players build a prize pool of $14,600,000 after 15 re-entries.

As you might expect, the invited pros half of the field was stacked with top-tier talent. And it was even tougher from the perspective of Smith because his partner was out of the running in the early levels.

Retired footballer Mario Mosböck was the guy who stood between Smith and what would be the third biggest score of his incredible career.

During the final table stage, the Austrian held the chip lead almost exclusively until heads-up play started. At that point Smith took over completely and play was one-way until the 34-year-old American was crowned champion.

Speaking after his win, Smith said:

"Poker's really tough these days and only getting tougher. I started playing super high rollers in 2012 and there's only like seven of us who are still left from back then. It's really cool that I still get to compete and sometimes win at this level. This is a huge moment and it's really cool that I get to do it."

The $3,870,000 prize takes Smith live career earnings to $49,351,218. He has now racked up more than $8 million in the last six months and is less than $250k behind Daniel Negreanu who sits in fifth place on the all-time winners list.
